13th July 2017

For the moment the buses are driving again, see http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/notici...ransporte-galicia/00031499888492949540671.htm as the strike has been temporarily suspended. This morning there was still some lack in sufficient buses, but now is all back to normal. But this is/could be only a temporary thing as the underlying conflict hasn't been resolved completely yet.

As @peregrina2000 has mentioned in another post, the strike has been extended, see http://www.eldiario.es/galicia/economia/huelga-autobuses-Galicia-extiende-semana_0_661783910.html

Summary: From Tuesday 11th July they will strike every day of the week until the conflict is resolved. There is a, very minimalist, skeleton service in place and taxis are also 'overworked'. So, you DO need to plan in plenty of travel time if you need to go, f.e., to the airport.

Please plan in a lot of time of traveling to the airport and/or to Finisterre/Muxia. Public transport (basically the buses) is/are on strike at the moment in Galicia, including Santiago.

If you understand Spanish (or use Google Translate) you can learn more here: http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/307...0-vuelve-dejar-sin-transporte-67-000-alumnos/

There are also reports/anecdotes/rumors that there have been heated arguments yesterday among people that fought for the last available space on a bus - people that were afraid to miss their planes.

Other rumors concern picketers (spelling?) trying to stop taxis on their way to the airport/Muxia/Finisterre.

So, in case that you are affected, just plan to walk ;-)

Bus fare from central Santiago to the airport is €3. The flat rate taxi fare is €21.

If you share a taxi with 2 or three others, the cost difference is not all that bad.

There are taxi stands on Rua da San Francisco, about 100 meters north of the Plaza Obradoiro, and just beyond the airport bus stop at Plaza de Galicia.

If you can handle calling a taxi in Spanish, the local radio taxi service is: +34.981.56.92.92. They are very prompt - normally.

Good luck...

I hope this helps.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Yes, it seems that it is over for this week BUT will repeat some days each week until an agreement is reached - so do check carefully if your travel plans are affected. Buen Camino, SY

Hola everyone,
The bus strike affected travelers significantly this past Tuesday and Wednesday. The airport bus from Plaza de Galicia was supposed to run a few times a day (instead of every half hour) and sometimes didn't show up. Taxis were extremely few and far between @nidarosa, and even when phoned the taxi company wasn't picking up the phone. Taxi stands were at times completely empty. (Even though it was the bus drivers who were striking, taxis were so busy shuttling people around that there weren't many left over to wait at taxi stands). We heard of a few people missing flights because they simply couldn't get to the airport. It was a bit chaotic.

So....no need to worry if you're flying out on a Tuesday or Wednesday coming up, but perhaps prepare yourself to wait early in line for an airport bus (since they're running on a reduced schedule Tuesdays and Wednesdays), or try to catch a taxi earlier in the day just to make sure you make it to the airport for your flight, even if you have to wait at the airport for a few extra hours. Sharing a taxi with others also headed to the airport might be a good idea as well.

According to tourist info, here in Santiago, the strike is not happening now but is scheduled to repeat each week on the same day(s) that it occurred this week (Wednesday for sure, don't know about any other days). Stay tuned.
We woke up to the strike on Wednesday morning and took a taxi to the airport. 24 euro flat rate from the bus stop close to the cathedral. Others in the bus line hadn't heard about it yet. Our hostel owner came in early to let us know.

Thanks for the info @SYates and @natefaith - I am flying into Santiago with hand luggage only and was hoping to go straight on the first available bus or taxi to get to the bus station in town to catch the early bus to Ferrol ... no big deal if I miss it, there is another one about two hours later and I believe they serve café con leche and tarta de Santiago in the bar around the corner. All will be well. I am flying out again on Tuesday and will make sure I go early. Though missing my flight and having to stay in Santiago for longer is also tempting ... :D
I hope the strike is resolved soon.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Will this strike also affect the overnight bus from Ourense to Paris as this is the cheapest way we found to get back from Santiago to Paris on 02 September.

@Anna Russell That would be a really long strike if it lasts until September! You should be fine then ;-) OK, unless there is a new strike affecting public transport by then. Just keep an eye on the forum as we pass news quickly around among us and you will be fine! Buen Camino, SY

PS And an international overnight bus is even less likely to be affected imo.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I have been rethinking things and am starting to gravitate towards walkingvto Muxia. But then I remembered the bus strike. I am assuming pilgrims will be joining forces and getting taxis from Muxia, has anyone been there during the strike to confirm this?

Latest news on the Santiago grapevine is that the strike will continue each Tuesday and Wednesday until the conflict is resolved. The other days of the week 'should' be fine. Also taxis seem to be be quite busy at the moment, so early bookings might be advisable. Buen Camino, SY

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Sorry If this question has been answered. I can't seem to find info on where to get bus info from Muxía to Santiago.

Is there a website for schedules etc?

Thanks!

Thanks @SYates Any update on the strike please.

Still going on, but there seems to be a skeleton service (every hour or so) to the airport. Again, until the conflict is resolved, the strike takes place every Tuesday and Wednesday with skeleton services running or not running. Plan in enough time to get to the airport. Buen Camino, SY

It's a mighty pain and fluet. Booked a 1 day tour so I can get to Finisterre and Muxia and even that was a crap shoot because they have to honour the strike too and are substituting with Taxi shuttles.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

The Galicia Rail pass is available to anyone who completes the Camino and is awarded the completion certificate. It allows for 3 days of train travel and also discounts to other places you may...
Has anybody recently volunteered at the Pilgrim office for the 15 day timeframe? Where did you stay in Santiago?
