Hola!
Would like to know the bus time table from Santiago to Porto?
How many hours is the bus ride?
I guess the Alsa buses are running the route - can´t open the Alsa home page.

Annie, my information is that there are no direct train links from Santiago de Compostela to Porto and one has to go via Vigo.
http://www.renfe.es/ or the Spanish train timetables.
http://www.cp.pt for the Portuguese train timetables.

There are two trains daily between Vigo and Porto. Connecting Services as follows:
Santiago da Compostela: 05:50 Vigo: 07:37 Vigo: 07:40 Porto: 09:55
Santago da Compostela: 17:38 Vigo: 18:59 Vigo: 19:44 Porto: 21:55

The bus from Santiago goes straight to Porto and the airport, twice a day, for 22 euros, and then
on to Fatima, Lisboa.
http://www.alsa.es for the bus timetables.
By Bus: Santiago to Porto – Fatima – Lisbon http://www.alsa.es
2.45hrs costs 22euro one way 10am 17pm 10pm 22pm

If you take a train to Vigo there is a direct bus service to Oporto airport and city.
http://www.autna.com/regulares.php for the bus service schedule click on servicios

As you will be travelling on a Sunday, other things to note are; Sunday and Public holiday services are usually reduced, when compared with the rest of the week so check the timetables. There is an hours’ difference between the two countries.

About moving a bike from Santiago to Porto, I had a look at the Alsa site and they don't allow bikes on international routes, with the exception of Spain to Morocco, not much help here. The price has gone up, it's now €30 for the journey, leaving Santiago de Compostela at 11.00 and arriving Porto at 14.15.

In May this year, I used a company in Santiago called Galipito to move my bike home to the south of Spain. They do international bike transport, for that Spain to Portugal leg (probably the shortest of all their international routes) they have a set charge of €110. Their number for English calls is 00 34 698182475. I know they are acutely aware of competition so if you pointed out that Porto is only just down the road and asked for a reduced price they might just help you.

You could also simply present yourself at the bus station in Santiago. They might just let you and your bike on the bus. What happens on a website and what happens on the ground is not always the same in Spain.

If you have no joy with Plan 2 above, why not book your ticket from Santiago to Tui on the border between Spain and Portugal? It'll only be €5 for the bike on that leg. Then cycle over the bridge to Valenca do Minho into Portugal, it's only 3.5 kms and it's the next bus stop on the Alsa route to Porto, explore your surroundings for a day, great Portuguese sea food right there, spend the night in an albergue, then pick up the Alsa bus again to Porto the next day, with your bike of course, for another €5 and you'll be in Porto by 14.15 in time for another good sea food lunch.

Hope it all works out OK.

Hello
Does anyone know the exact address of the Bus Terminal in Porto (we are catching the bus from Santiago de Compostela)?

I've seen two suggestions - Porto Internorte Bus Terminal, Praça Galiza and Campo 24 de Agosto. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as we are hoping to book a hotel in advance...

Many thanks :)

Alsa bus

At the bottom of Alsa international page see the list:
"Para ver las direcciones de las paradas haz click en el enlace situado al lado de cada país"
Click "Portugal (ver parada)".

The address given for the stop in Porto is:

-INTERFACE CASA DA MUSICA (RUA DO CAPITAO HENRIQUE GALVAO, S/N)-

When using that with google earth, that only makes sense if its Metro Casa da Musica - the Porto Metro station located near Casa da Musica.

Alsa website has crapped out ... I guess I need to look at Santiago to Oporto as Porto not listed as destination. There should be an address on the itenerary.

I too have trouble width the ALSA website, but last June there was a bus from Santiago to Porto ( also called Oporto) that stops at Porto airport. The first bus each day leaves Santiago bus station at 10.00 am and takes 3 1/2 hours, but with the 1 hour time difference between Spain and Portugal, it arrives at the airport at just after 12.00 noon and at Porto at 12.30 pm. If you do get on to the ALSA website, it is an international service, so click on 'International'.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I have just managed to get onto the ALSA website, but it will not accept enquiries for May, probably because it is too far ahead. I checked for bus departures in February, and the earliest bus leaves Santiago at 10.00am and arrives at Porto airport at 12.15 pm (local time). The cost is 31 euros. When I did the journey in May this year I booked the day before, which was just as well as the bus to Porto was full so ALSA put on another bus direct to the airport. There are two more bus departures later in the day.

The best way to see the time schedule online, it's through a company called InterNorte. Go to http://www.internorte.pt/ Choose "Bilheteira Online", and you can change the language, If you buy your ticket within 30 days before your departure, you can get a 50% discount.

The only problem with this is that this BUS do not stop near the airport. But it stops right in front of a Metro station (Casa da Música).

Best Regards
Diogo

As I looked at google maps ,that's the place , the final stop in Porto for the bus from Santiago. Around the corner is the metrostop and in front of the paragem (busstop) are plenty of taxi's as being said before by Lisa T
And mind there are no toilets at the busstop so if..do your thing in the bus before...:) A toilet is provided at the bus.

Well the bus that I took this year didn't had any toilet inside. But we stoped for 5 minutes in Vigo, and there was a toilet in there.

The bus stops for 1 hour in Porto, for lunch, and you do have a toilet on the bus stop. I know it, because I used it :D

So my good friend. You were lucky at the time and we were either :D Both we found a toilet..you even two :) Anyway ALSA takes you from Santiago to Porto and vice versa. The bus stops at the Santiago busstation (a good 20 minutes walk from the center but which peregrino cares about that distance ;) ) , the Vigo busstation and at the Porto Airport and Porto busstation nearby the Casa da Musica. Rua Capitao Henrique Galvao , Porto
(Interface metro Casa Da Musica )

By then (june 2013) we experienced by booking on line at the ALSA website after filling in an endless form that at the end they did not accept a foreign creditcard. Only Spanish creditcards ! So the Tourist Info in Santiago booked the bus for us two days in advance to be sure we had a seat in the bus . We got a special price because we are 60+ ! I thougt this is called " reducción tercera edad" in Spanish. Browsing at the ALSA website I did not find any pointing to this reduction but it is good to know that it exists to whom it concerns :) So ask for it I should say !

Happy new year and bom caminho !

Ok, now I remembered something about the bus. Actually, there are TWO buses leaving Santiago every day. I remembered that there is one that goes from Santiago to Lisboa and that stops in Porto, and that there is one that has its final destination in Porto. Probably it's that one that stops in the airport, because I and my friends (one of them has done the same trip 2 times), don't have any memories of stopping near the Airport of Porto. What I do remember is that on the bus station, of 2 buses, one saying Lisboa and the other saying Porto, and the people who had Porto has a destination, being sent to the bus to Porto, beside both of them stopping at the same places.

Best Regards
Diogo

My good friend Diogo. The bus we took from Santiago went to Porto via Vigo and stopped at the airport of Porto and went on to paragem casa da Musica.
About a bus going on to Lisboa I do not know because I did not ask about it
Our flight back home was from Porto.

What was the reason you and your friend can't remember whether the bus stopped at the airport or not ? :D demasiado Aguardente velha or falling asleep meanwhile or ..... ?:)

By the way did you hop off the bus in Porto and walked back home to Castanheiro or were you on the bus to Lisboa. :D ?

No, I have a very good memorie, and I'm not a drinker any more. And you gaved me reason saying that your bus ended up in Porto. The one that goes to Lisbon stops at Casa da Música for one hour to luch, and then it goes south.

I've tooked the bus, I hadn't enough time to walk back home. Plus, from Porto, it's almost 300km. Probably in a future, after doing the Francês, I'm going to do a "Home to Santiago" Caminho.

Abraços e tudo de bom para vocês.

Hi there,

Have you had any luck with the Alsa website? I've been trying to sort out the bus from Santiago de Compostela to Porto for the end of my first Camino, which I'll be walking in April and concluding in early May. From what I can see, even after breaking down to use Google Translate, the Alsa website is designed to drive me insane.

Yeah ... forget ALSA ... for international trips. Its not good information.

Go from Santiago to Vigo with Monbus bus then transfer to Autna bus from Vigo to Porto.

Autna goes from Santiago too so check the schedule.

I'm finding any trip that crosses borders ... best tactic is to get to a border town ... cross the border to a border town on the other side ... and then continue journey.

And, I just found that there is train service from Santiago to Vigo and Vigo to OPorto.

Hello,

I went into http://www.alsa.es site to see how long and how much is the fare from Santiago to Porto. I don't see Porto as a destination. Am i missing something? like it's named differently.

Thanks! Buen Camino

Some sources call it 'Porto' while others call it 'Oporto'. Use the 'International' tab on the ALSA site.

Hi Dennis, make sure that you click on the international tab. Destination is shown as Oporto (with another option for Oporto airport) once you select Portugal.

Hello,

If you are happy with the time frame, I suggest you book ahead. My wife and I took the Santiago-Porto bus on the 6th of October, 100% full.

Booked through http://www.internorte.pt as suggested by Diogo, as the Alsa site still doesn't accept a non-spanish credit card. Finally the bus was... an Alsa one. According to the Santiago bus station personnel, the bus may be tagged Internorte or Alsa. I understand it's a kind of joint operation.

You will need to print the e-ticket you will get by e-mail. Many albergues/bars/restaurants are equipped with Internet stations and printers in the last 100 km (you are not the only one needing to print!).

Thank you BlueNavy.

My trip is not until May 2015 but as said, i just wanted to start looking on my trip details. This bus leaves around noon from Santiago. Is there any other option I have if I want to arrive earlier in Porto? Car rental is not an option at this time :) I was hoping to find an early arrival in Porto. I will be in Porto only for an overnite stay; before proceeding to Lisbon. I wanted to explore the city a bit for I heard it's a nice one. So anything that will arrive between 11 am - 1 pm is preferred.

Go from Santiago to Vigo with Monbus bus or Renfe train then transfer to Autna bus or CP Celta train from Vigo to Porto. Renfe also connects from Vigo to Valenca where CP regional trains connect to Porto.

Merry Christmas all!

This is an old thread...
The Alsa bus takes you from Santiago de Compostela to Oporto (Porto).
It takes about 4 h 15 min.
€25-33 depending on the season.
Very comfortable.
Stops at the Oporto airport.
And yes, take the different time zones into consideration if you are about to catch a flight.

PS. My backpack was checked in and I got a receipt just like during flights.

You can buy your bus (train) ticket next to the Pilgrims´ Office in SDC.

Hey NavyBlue—would you know how soon the bus schedule is posted? I've been trying to see the bus schedule for May, but internorte is being interNOte—no schedule.

The bus schedule for May isn't yet published on the Alsa site, only travel up to 31st Mar 2015. This suggests they publish about 3 months in advance so May should become available late Jan/early Feb but worth checking the Alsa site regularly through Jan and when available use Internorte to book the ticket.

Good day,

Will it be possible to buy a ticket in either Lisbon or Porto, as they do not accept credit cards?

I don't want to wait untill I get to Santiago, as the bus may be full.

Thank you,

It seems like internorte.pt does not show results from Santiago to Porto anymore.
If booking directly with ALSA still brings problems, you can try booking with Busbud.

In addition to ALSA, Flixbus is currently offering this route.

Other options would be car-sharing platform BlaBlaCar or taking the Celta train from Vigo.

This article explains in detail all the possibilities on how to get from Porto to Santiago:
https://www.travelinho.com/en/travel/from-porto-to-santiago-de-compostela

Same would apply in the other direction.
