Camino Frances weather tips for the summer

Hi there! Will be walking the Camino Frances on mid-July to mid-August and my question is: how well should I be equipped regarding rain/warm cloth?
Will I need a fleece jacket for the first days, or a long-sleeve shirt will do?
Does it rains heavily in Galicia on August?

Thanks (-;

Hi there earnrunner,

Ive walked those months and found that a lightweight micro fleece to be sufficient for warmth rather than a heavy fleece jacket, and a pac-away cagoule or rain jacket to be sufficient to keep me dry....I can only remember using it twice.
A backpack cover is a good idea, although a poncho would cover both.

Honestly, I don't recall being REALLY cold, the mornings were fresh but as soon as the blistering sun rose above the trees/hills, off came the fleece and zip of trouser legs :D

The weather in Galicia can be more inclement than other parts of the route but again, I don't recal getting drenched at all...in fact, by mid August, in Galicia should be the most favourable weather of the season. You can maybe expect 5 days of rain somewhere in Galicia in August (averages).

I have lived in Galicia Jun,July and Aug, for the past 10+ years. The one thing I can say with certainty, is that the weather is incredibly unpredictable. Temperatures and rainfall not only vary from month to month and year to year, but even from morning to evening. We entertain guests from the US all summer, and I always warn them of the need for dual wardrobes...a 90degree afternoon at the beach most often turns into a very cool evening, pants/sweaters required. Then again, we've had a few heat waves...you just never know. It is because of this experience that I will bring a sleepingbag and light gloves of my Jun-July Camino. Best! C.

Over its 500 mile length, the temperature will vary. You can check average temperatures in the major cities during various months on:

As hot as it might get during the day, I never noticed that night was particularly hot. Inside some albergues, the heat was stifling.
