Camino Ingles First Timers Update

Time of past OR future Camino
2011
Hello to all members,

In July, we wrote about our wish to walk our first Camino, well as an update, We can say that our plans are well underway.

We have booked our flights and will arrive in Ferrol on Thursday 14th July, ready to start our Camino on the Friday, we have planned to walk between 6 to10 miles a day
and will arrive in Santiago on Saturday 23rd July, in time for the feast of St James .

We will stay in Santiago for a few days and then onto Finistera, before we come home. We chose July, mainly for the Feast day, but also hopefully for the lower rainfall, We know it may also be quite hot, but we can ‘cope’ with that, and maybe we can get a swim in along the way!!!.

We would like to thank all other members for their posts on this forum giving help, advice and encouragement to us whilst planning our journey, and also the many videos on You Tube etc, showing the route, we particularly like Johnny Walkers, slide show, the video from, rovereto84 ( walked in the snow), and the recent post, on this forum, Camino Ingles a Pie.

As said in our first post we are planning on staying in Hotels and Hostels along the way, we have made bookings for some of these already, as July may be busy with holidaymakers nearer the coast.

We now have our backpacks, we went for Ospreys, a Kestral 38 for me and a Talon 22 for my wife.

Is a great shame that the Camino Travel Office is to close, we have had some really good advice from Ivar & his team, but we wish them well for the future.

We were, hoping to borrow some walking poles from them, after, they were offered to us, when we arrive in Santiago before our walk, as we are only taking hand luggage,
on the plane, if anyone knows of an outlet in Ferrol or Santiago, for us to buy some we would be pleased to hear.

We are really looking forward to our first ‘Camino’, it may be a short one but hopefully it will lead on the others in the future, not only are we doing this for ourselves, but we hope to raise some money from family & friends, via official sponsorship, for our local School for Downs Syndrome, as our Grandson, Sebastian 3 years, is a sufferer.
I’m sure this is not unacceptable, in the spirit of the Camino, for others who need help and support.

We will post again before next July, but in the meantime we would like to
we wish everyone a very Happy Christmas & New Year, and thanks

Best wishes
Neil & Brenda White

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Hi Neil and Brenda

A couple of things - I'm just posting a new edition of the Guide. There may be a summer update next year so if you wish get in touch to check before you go.

Secondly - check in at the Pilgrims' Office in Santiago because in addition to the mountain of sticks which are left at the front door there is a bundle of walking poles in the office which pilgrims have left. Pop something in the donations box and take your pick.

John

Thank you for those 2 points, we will keep a check on your updates,
and also make sure we go to the Pilgrims Office before we leave for
Ferrol.

thank you

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Hi Neil and Brenda,
Our plans for walking the Camino Inglés in May 2011 (DV) are also going well. We'll also be planning shortish stages, about 16km per day. My first Camino, Terry's second. We'll let you know how we get on.

Johnny, by 'posting' the guide update do you mean submitting hard copy to CSJ or posting online?

Happy Christmas and blessings on the planning
Tia Valeria

Hi Tia Valeria,

Thank you for your reply, We were originally going to walk the Camino in May 2011, but thought we needed the extra months to get more walking in and to be in Santiago for the feast of St James.

We are are quite happy with the stages we have planned, staying in Ferrol the night before the walk, we are making our first stop in Fene, then on to Pontedeume, Mino, Betanzos and will walk to Bar Julia and probably taxi to and from there, over the next 2 days staying at the Hostel in Bruma or Pension Meson Nove, so we can 'do the hill' in our own time, after that we will stop at Deixebre, Siquiro and finally Santiago. We hope that the earlier days of shorter daily distances will help us later when we are more used to walking everyday.
Thats the theory anyway!!!!!.

Best of luck with your planning as well.
best wishes

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
Johnny, Thank you.

Neil and Brenda; and Johnny,
Our current thinking is to walk from Ferrol to Betanzos, follow the guide down to Cos and then go across to Carral, then follow the Camino guide again to the junction with the Ferrol arm etc....

We will try to make notes on the cross over in case others want to try it too.

Meanwhile we keep on walking..............
