Camino Invierno - Poor trail condition being reported on Facebook (De. 2022)

Hi! I just wanted to make note of some cautions that are being reported on a Facebook Camino Invierno page about the condition of the trail in some areas. I know there are some on here who may be heading out soon! There's been a lot of rain in the area and here are some concerns that have been posted:

24 Dec. - "before reaching the Belesar bridge towards Chantada." - the post shows a picture of minor slope failure and rocks across the path.

23 Dec. - "Después del puente Taboada, se cayó la 1/2 de la calzada romana. El puente Taboada y la calzada romana está entre Lalín y Silleda." Translation: After the Taboada bridge, 1/2 of the Roman road fell. The Taboada bridge and the Roman road is between Lalín and Silleda.

The poster states that they were able to pass on the remaining road but are not sure of the trail condition. They notified the Guardia Civil and closest town hall.

21 Dec. - Rodeiro to Lalin "Aviso (21/12/2022): Un poco después del KM 73,737 el rio sobrepasa el puente. El puente está lleno de ramas, troncos, todo. Muy peligroso. Evita el río. En cuanto llegas al KM 73,737, ve a la izquierda y se juntará con el camino." Translation: A little after KM 73,737 the river exceeds the bridge. The bridge is full of branches, logs, everything. Very dangerous. Avoid the river. As soon as you get to KM 73,737, go left and it will join the road.

This was a few days ago now so hopefully the river levels have gone down. But in rainy weather, good to know a safer way around!

This same walker also found the trail covered in water in some areas. Passable, but the pictures look like careful footing is needed!

I do remember the path down to the Belesar bridge and the climb up the other side on the giant stone slabs, and thinking both would be difficult and even treacherous in/after heavy rain. Such are the challenges of a camino at this time of year..

Thanks @WestKirsty. In the newspaper this morning there seems to be a lot of Galician flooding and also a terrible bus accident where a bus went off into a river with several killed or missing. Safe passage to all during this holiday season no matter how you are traveling.

After the Taboada bridge, 1/2 of the Roman road fell. The Taboada bridge and the Roman road is between Lalín and Silleda.

Oh! This is sad. The bridge is really special, but equally so the road after it.



That stretch between Rodeiro and Lalin would be a real challenge in the wet. Two places spring to mind that could easily flood. Take care everyone, and thanks for the heads-up, @WestKirsty.

Thanks for these photos! Brings back memories from passing this way in October. It’s a challenge even when dry, a 30k day (as I remember). My walking companion was so tired after, that we took the next day off!

One of the many great things about having your grandkids around is that they can navigate the internet. Here is the picture from Facebook about the piece of Roman Road that has fallen after the Taboada Bridge.

We are receiving news of the bus crash even here, and I saw the photos… my heart is just broken for the families… reportedly, the bus occupants had been making the Christmas visit to incarcerated family….
Literally weeping as I type.
Is it foolish of me to hope that Father Manny and Sister Mary will have heard of the crash and will offer prayers for the families, and for the departed? I don’t know, but the loss just seems so very very cruel.
Similar devastation out in Kelowna, and I feel similarly about it.
I suppose part of it is that in each case, the bus loads carry more hardship aboard than other travellers contend with. In Canada, the bus is for those who have few options (with the exception being the special shuttles between resorts and airports — this was not that). The bus in Spain was filled with travellers facing the difficulty of having a child/father/brother in the jail…. And to have the catastrophes at this time of year…
May all the families be granted peace from grief sooner rather than later.
