Beautiful walk today to Cades. No breakfast in San Vicente, too early. Breakfast in Serdio.
Nice walk to Munorrodero, took variants as per Gronze web. Quiet.
Then on Nansa river walk all the way to Cades including variants. Problem was no facilities on river walk for 15km. Should have detoured to Cabanzon for lunch but beautiful, quiet, peaceful river walk. Just saw 2 others.
Albergue closed in Cades so had pre-booke Hotel Casona del Nansa beside Cades. Expensive 58 euro but very clean and really too good but no choice. Ravenous so had mixed salad with nuts, dry cured meat and hot goats cheeze 12 euro. The best. Roadside hotel so noisy cars etc.
Tomorrow on to Cicera.

Join our full-service guided tour of the Basque Country and let us pamper you!
I don’t think I have seen any pictures of the new (well, new to me, since I walked the “old” route) route along the river to Cades. Very very nice. The old route was through pretty countryside, but lots of asphalt and nothing too special. I do remember that Hotel Casona del Nansa, though, so that may be the point at which the new river walk joins up with the old route.

I think the route into Lafuente from here is all asphalt, unless some angel has taken it upon him or herself to take people off-road. I remember talking to a couple of elderly residents in Lafuente when I walked years few years ago and they told me there are lots of paths up there in the hills on the sides of the road. There was a very nice albergue in Lafuente, not sure it’s still open.

Thank you so much for your posts — keep the reports coming!!!

Nice quiet walk today to Cicera. Mainly on tarmac but rural roads. Few cars but popular with motorbikes. Stopped at Quintanilla for lunch only place with shop and cafe today. You need to buy food there as albergue in Cicera has no cafe.
Albergue 8euro, clean, hot showers, basic but fine.

It's on tomorrows walk to Cabanes..
Hi Sean,

I am planning to walk this route and onwards to Leon along the Vadiniense starting this 16 June so thanks for sharing the food/lodging details of your walk in realtime.
Will be starting from airport in Santander and proceed to San Vincente de Baquera along Norte. Will carry a lightweight tent (900g) to deal with closure of Cades albergue and post it home from Potes if of no further use.

Please keep the posts coming and have a fabulous trip!

Oh, of course. I had confused Cicera with Cabañes. With the routing through Cades and Cabañes, it sounds much improved.

My stages were not nearly as nice — San Vicente - La Fuente - Potes, and the route to Potes was alongside a shoulder-free crazily busy two lane highway.

So the old route I took went through neither Cades nor Cabañes, with more road walking than I’d care to remember.

A challenging walk today fron cicera over the mountain to Lebena and up the mountain to Cabanes. No facilities until cabanes. You need poles and food. Food in albergue v good. Then down to Potes. No walkers. Beautiful at peace with nature. The flora and fauna- birdsong, cowbells and the Griffon vultures over my head!!!
Albergue in potes 5euro. Very clean, good washing facilities but nowhere to dry clothes. Plenty of choice for food. Church in Lebena closed.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for your posts. I'm hoping to start this walk Aug. 30th. Do I understand that you were able to buy lunch at the Cabanes albergue? That's some good intel!

Yes. Beautiful mixed salad.

I’m assuming the albergue is still in the old jail in Potes looking out over the river (your next to last picture). What an awesome albergue! When I was there, the tourist office let pilgrims spend two nights there so that we could walk out and visit the monastery de Santo Toribio, and then come back to enjoy the rest of the day in Potes. Next day, onward to Fuente Dé.

Looking forward to your Vadiniense posts! The incessant road walking left one of my big toes painfully shredded into many blisters, so I had to bus the last day into LeĂłn and rest there for a few days before carrying on on the Salvador.

(P.s. I moved this thread to the Vadiniense sub-forum. We don’t have a special subforum for Lebaniego, and so we include it with the Vadiniense posts, since for most people the Lebaniego is a prelude to the Vadiniense, as it is for you).

Yes. The old jail. Room for 60. I was only one!
