Camino Madrid - second time around

Time of past OR future Camino
VDLP 2010&11 Madrid 2013&15 Mozarabe 2015 Cid 2019
I am thoroughly enjoying this Camino 2 years and 2 weeks after the first time. I started in Cercedilla - the walk over Fuenfria was still arduous but a delight to do it with my son, who is now living in Spain and my friend David, an ex military type. At the bottom of the hill he pointed out remnants of artillery shrapnel and trenches - and it seems this was one of the sites of the Battle of Segovia in the Civil War. This is the main theme of Hemingway's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'. We had a rest day in Segovia visiting the magnificent gardens at La Granja. We managed to stay in the rain shadow all the way to Santa Maria la Real de Nieva while the rest of Spain was in deluge. However we did a few extra kms due to following the wrong signs just a few km from Santa Maria. A Hostal on the main highway has posted misleading signs - so if you come to a large solar farm on the way into Santa Maria you have missed the trail in. Then we found most of Santa Maria closed on a Monday including Hostal Real. However we stayed at the very comfortable Albergue and one bar and a shop nearby were open late. In Coca tonight. No rain and great walking conditions.

Great, Marianne! And very thoughtful of you to post warning about wrong markings! It wasn't the case last summer when I walked it. Enjoy this wonderful Camino also for my ;)

Ultreia!

In Peñaflor de Hornija tonight and delighted to report the albergue is excellent. As is the albergue in Alcazaren. Very clean and comfortable. We are so fortunate to have the people of these towns take care of us so well. Walking conditions have been very good - the recent rain has made the sand through the pine forest quite firm. Lots of agricultural activity, cold mornings and warm days and beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Much of the signage after Ciguñuela appears to have been wiped out by farming activity but if in doubt keep going straight ahead. We were saved from a wrong turn towards Vallodolid airport by a man on a tractor.

I ENVY YOU SOOO MUCH!!! ;););)
Did they repaired the door knob/handle at the albergue in Alcazaren already? When I walked in there it just stayed in my hands :D No additional strenght needed...
You mean there is a mess with markings after Puente Duero? I remember that but worked OK with just keeping straight or left through Simancas.
Yes, albergue in Penaflor de Hornija is very cozy, with large patio at the back. And I also found the village quite nice, nothing special, no tienda etc., but locals were nice throughout my stay.

Nice nice nice to hear you're on this trail again.
I love this route and can't wait to walk it again (hopefully) in April!
:::happy dance:::

You were brave to walk over Fuenfria again!
I'm debating whether or not to skip that section b/c of my ankle, but it was soooo beautiful!
Please keep posting!

Kinky, you broke the door handle? Is that the one where you shake hands? I'll have to look at my notes now.

Is there a guide for walking from Madrid?

The walk from Madrid is foolproof! No really, it is. It's brilliantly easy to follow using the yellow arrows. I know how we fret when sitting at home how we are going to find our way, but the routes are fabulously laid out. Who would have thought painting yellow arrows over hundreds and hundreds of kilometres would work! An eGuide on your phone might be handy for a bit of passing info, and print off the complete day-by-day guides from previous walkers, plus the list of albergues, and you are good to go. You could for peace of mind download and use a GPS trail onto your smartphone, so you can check where you are in the very unlikely event you get lost.
