I was looking through my VF photos today and I remembered that I had intended to comment on the positive experience I had when I went to the Cathedral in July to pick up my credential. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon and there were about 20 people in line to pay to enter the Cathedral grounds. There was a young man at the entrance explaining to everyone that certain sections of the Cathedral were closed unless you were planning on attending the service. When I got to the front of the line, I asked him where I could acquire the credential. He looked at me somewhat surprised and said "Oh, are you a Pilgrim"? I made a split-second decision not to get into the whole discussion about "What does it really mean to be a Pilgrim", so I simply said "Yes."

He immediately left his post at the entrance and escorted me to the information kiosk, where he introduced me to the lady in the kiosk as a Pilgrim, bade me a safe journey, and then hustled back to the entrance. The lady in the kiosk was equally engaging, pointing out the stone that marks the "official" start of the VF, asking me where I was from, saying how fortunate I was to be starting out, and just generally making me feel a little special. I was a little bit embarrassed to say that I was only going as far as Arras, but it did not seem to matter to her.

It was a very nice way to start out, so thanks to those involved!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
This mirrors my very positive experiences at Canterbury Cathedral at the start of the VF. exceptionally helpful young man at the ticket office, and the wonderful Canon Clare (?Claire) whose blessing brought me to tears.

I believe that the canon spells her name "Clare". According to her entry in the Cathedral website she has walked the Camino Frances and has also led several pilgrimages associated with the cathedral.

Yes Canon Clare Edwards is wonderful. She is herself a pilgrim ( C.F. among others) and will give a pilgrim blessing to those leaving the cathedral. She has many other duties but finds time for pilgrims to and from Canterbury. The C of E is fortunate to have such women.

We started our VF from Besancon - your posts make me really want to go and do that first half from Canterbury to Besancon. You don't realise when you do your first camino that it's an addiction that never goes away ;)

All those nice comments make me more want to go ... i'm taking off from C'bury early May 2018 ... ( 90 day's to reach Rome ... ;-)

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I suggest you let Forum members know when and how you will arrive in U.K. to begin in Canterbury in case those who live in Kent can help.

We actually should go back to Assisi and finish an unfortunately aborted route from there....but Canterbury sounds much more interesting.
It would be great to have a bit of a meet with local Kent pilgrims if we do firm up our plans.

We hope to start from Canterbury in 2018.:):)

Why not???

We are 18 months out, with a Susie and I planning to do the whole VF from there in 2019. Seems a long way off...but I’m sure the wait will go quickly.
