The Hispania Nostra Foundation published a report that lists 79 historic buildings in the region that are "risk of disappearing" and found that Castilla y Leon is the community with the most dilapidated monuments.
The 'red list' of Spanish Historical Heritage details 242 architectural monuments from all over Spain which, according to the foundation Hispania Nostra, "are subjected to risk of disappearing". The nation's largest region Castilla y Leon tops the list with 79 'at risk' monuments. Castilla-La Mancha has 37 buildings on the list, Aragon 33 and Andalusia with 23 took the following positions in the list.
Hispania Nostra is a non-profit organization whose purpose is the defense, safeguard and value placed on Spanish Cultural Heritage and its surroundings.
Some of the buildings that are included on the list are already under rehabilitation as in the case of the Monastery of St. Anton in Castrojeriz-Burgos, which is being renovated thanks to the reversal of the Foundation Eliécer Diez Temiño-San Anton. On other occasions, such as the convent of Santa Maria de Jesus Avila, private enterprise takes over the rehabilitation of the monument. This monastery, known as' The Gordillas', which is in danger of sinking will be converted into a luxury hotel.
Not all locations and buildings have the same luck and in the same province, Madrigal of High Torres' hosts' two monuments in ruins: the home of the Palace of Justice and Convent outside.
Despite having been rehabilitated several times the Castle Fernan Gonzalez, dating from the thirteenth century, is at risk of total ruin with the roof collapsed by the side of the cracks.
But, although sometimes it may not seem that way, Castilla y Leon knows how to care for their heritage. This year, the community received three Awards for Cultural Heritage-Europa Nostra European Union. Of the 109 projects from 29 countries that were presented, the restoration of the Church of St. Nicholas of Bari in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Avila, received a medal in the category of Conservation.
