Cheap place to stay in Pamplona?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay in Pamplona for a first night? Assuming that the train gets in at 8.30pm I'm guessing that'll be too late to get into the pilgrim hostels (which now that I think about it I've never managed to find!) also I'm guessing the place that gives out the pilgrim credencials doesn't open until the next morning anyway... :?

It depends on what you mean by cheap...
I stayed at the hotel Eslava (tel.948- 222 270) about 40 Euro with nice breakfast. http://www.booking.com/hotels/hotel/es/ ... 2009-08-20. I made internet- booking while on the camino. Quiet street and good night´s sleep.

Next time I would stay at the Pension Otano (tel. 948- 227 036)where some friends of mine stayed in the middle of the old city but noicy streets close to the Plaza del Castillo.

I stayed at the Hotel Eslava & liked it. You can walk there from the train station. Just go up to the street (Taconera?), take a right, cross the river, then once you see the church of San Lorenzo (where the statue of San Fermin is)& the old town on the left, turn left on Calle Mayor for just a bit, then left again on the first street. There is a big open area in front of the hotel (part of the nearby Convent, I think), so it's easy to spot. 10 minutes walk, about. Can't remember now how long it took me.

I never stayed in Pamplona, just walked on through and stayed in the next town Cizur Minor. Love it there.

Hi, yes I also stayed in cizur menor last year but I think given that we're arriving late in the evening and we'll be exhausted from travelling all day walking out to cizur menor is not really an option.
I thought the albergue in cizur menor was very nice but the showers were freezing cold (I know that's not unusal for the camino but it's also never fun either!) also both churches were inaccessible.

Whilst I think Pamplona is a very nice place I have memories of arriving there with my mum 2 years ago after walking down from Le Puy (we finished in Pamplona) without having booked anything and not being able to find the pilgrim albergue and having to wonder around for ages in the afternoon heat looking for affordable accomodation that had a spare room! I guess that I'm a bit nervous about turning up so late without an accomodation plan! I think we'll try and book the 21 euro hostel online!

It is 5.5 km from the airport to Cizur Menor and a little over 6 km to downtown Pamplona. An airport taxi can get you to either place for about the same fare.

The Cizur Minor albergue fills up though. The day we reached Pamplona, a whole heap of people were told to get on the bus and come back to the Pamplona albergue, as it filled up at Cizur Minor relatively early on.

Yes it was full almost as soon as it opened when we were there last year in May. I think it's pretty popular!

I was assuming that 9pm in the evening was realistically too late to get any pilgrim accomodation, in or outside Pamplona. Not least because we won't have credentials, which I'm guessing we won't be able to get until the following morning.

Elzi, that depends on how late the albergue stays open. As my Dad once said, "You don't get the discount unless you ask for it," It never hurts to ask & you might be able to get your credential there instead of having to wait until the next day.
