Clothing help for early June

koby

Member
I need help in selecting clothing suggested for the walk between Sarria and Santiago in early June. I know cotton is out and synthetics in, along with some wool. I mention my age, almost 80, so you will understand I am not 25, 45, or even 65 so I don't have clothes that "wick" or "convertible" pants and why I need your input. I have not listed nightwear, boots, socks and small items. My luggage will be forwarded to accommodations for me but I hope to keep it as small as possible. How does the following look?

3 short sleeve crew neck tops (synthetic)
3 long sleeve crew neck tops (synthetic)
2 pairs of lightweight convertible pants (preferably convert to capris)
1 pair slacks

1 hoodie
I have a hoodie sweater (35% wool, 48% acrylic, 17% nylon sweater with fuzzy surface)
Not exactly lightweight but warm.
Should I get a synthetic hoodie instead?
Are they warm?

Jacket.
What weight? Should it be warm?
Should it be lined? Waterproof?

Rainwear/Wind protection
What would I need?

advice.

Hi Koby,
The weather in June will be warm, maybe very hot. I think you perhaps have a little bit too much with you.
Bring your three short sleeved tops
One long sleeved should be sufficient.
You need raingear. A poncho works well as it allows the air to circulate, make sure it is a long one, because if it is raining the wind will be from the West and will blow it against you.
If you already have a hoody. one is sufficient all you need is a very light windproof jacket to keep you warm in the evenings.
Having said this you most probably still have too much as it will be warm, but I understand that as we get older we feel the cold more. I think a synthetic hoody might be a good investment.
No need to bring the extra pair of slacks. Two pairs of convertible pants sufficient. Or bring your slacks and only one pair of converible pants

I hope this helps. I'm 68 and inclined to feel the cold. I say this in order that you know I am not a twenty something with a good internal heating system.

See what advice other more experienced pilgrims give you.

I wish you a wonderful Camino,

Lydia

Thank you Lydia for your suggestions -- I now have a light wind/rain jacket and a pair of lightweight capris and looking for convertible pants. I have a good quality plastic rain poncho -- huge and looks like it would shelter a half dozen travellers. The major sporting goods store where I bought it some 20 years ago and never used, confirms it is a good and I don't need one with soft coating ($80). Does anyone have an opinion on the poncho?

I think I can get by with a carry-on and a backpack but that will depend since I must carry extra shoes and walking poles that will have to fit into checked carry-on. I have pre-arranged accommodations and luggage forwarding so I won't have everything with me.

What are the basics I should I carry on a daily basis when walking? Suggestions appreciated and I can work from there.

I will be walking alone. And thanks for your help.

Kobe asked:
daily basis when walking

Extra socks, water, light weight jacket, poncho, blister meds, camera, sunscreen, hat, did I mention water?
Snacks...hard cheese, salami, etc. Keep it simple

I'm sure there are a few personal items, but keep it light if you're sending your optional gear ahead.

Buen Camino,

Arn

My experience in Galicia in June a couple years ago was decidedly not warm. We had hot weather earlier, but cold and rainy weather in Galicia. So you just never know. So make sure you have some warm layers. A couple days I was layered up with everything I had - tee, long sleeved running shirt, fleece, and rain jacket. I was *just* comfortable, but glad it wasnt any cooler than it was.
