Coastal Route to Finisterre.

Hi everybody,

I have decided to walk from Porto to Finisterre in early September.

I walked the Frances 10 years ago so have some understanding of whats involved. Also, I'm reasonably fit so I think (hope!) I should be good for distances etc.

At the moment, I'm just trying to figure time/distance so I can see if I have enough time or rather how much time I will need.

My (very rough at this stage) plan at this stage is something like this:

Day 1

Arrive in Porto

Day 2

A full day in Porto

Day 3 - 13

Camino Coastal Route from Porto to Santiago

This is allowing for 10 days... 9 days of walking, one day of rest in between Porto and Santiago.

Day 14

Rest day in Santiago

Day 15 - 17

Santiago - Finisterre

Day 18

Fly home!

I know that is a little basic at this stage but just wanted to your opinions.

I guess my 'biggest' question is whether Port - Santiago in 9 days is possible?

If you re walking on both the 3rd and the 13th - as you suggest here- you actually have 11 days, i.e. 10 days walking and 1 day rest in between. Ample time for the inland route from Porto to Santiago , but can't advise you on the coastal which is a little longer and I think would involve a couple of 30 km + stages because of the uneven spacing of accomodation.

The rest seems ok, as long as you factored in your bus return to Santiago and flight departure time!

Last year I did the central route from Porto to Santiago in 7 days, but I felt I really pushed myself on the last 2 days at 45 kms & 46 kms. Glad I did it but would back off a bit next time. I am considering doing the coastal route this September in 10 days.

SUGGESTION 1: On your "DAY 2" which you are planning to spend in Porto, perhaps finish your day by just walking 10 kms from Porto to Matosinhos. You can probably do that in 2-3 hours and it gets you on your way. I understand this is where many people start their walk anyways.

SUGGESTION 2: You may find you do not need a rest day between Porto and Santiago (unless you have specific site seeing plans or activities). It's fairly flat walking.

There is no need for a rest dsy
The 3 days allowed to Finisteere can now be 4 so walk to Muxia

Paul,
If you can do two more days and go to Muxia you’ll love it. If your going back to Santiago they have a bus that leaves around 7AM daily. Joe
