Hi everyone,

I am a wheelchair user and want to do the camino - Any advice? would it be possible? I can walk some distance, but could need to use the chair at times.

Hola Welshchief

Every year between 20 - 30 pilgrims register at the pilgrims office in Santiago saying they made the journey using a wheelchair. But I know from experience this number doesn't include many other pilgrims who use one from time to time i.e they walk some stretches and use a wheelchair or other assistance for other stretches. I'm sure you can do it too. Sil is a fount of information on this subject and may in fact be able to put you in touch via blog or websites with pilgrims who have done this. You could also e mail the CSJ http://www.csj.org.uk who may laso be able to put you in touch with a fellow pilgrims with first hand experience.

Regards

John

I am attaching a couple of extracts from my book for wheelchair users. I hope they help you to plan your Camino. Once you have done it please send me more information to update the chapter. I have a son in a wheelchair and the Camino is on his bucket list!

Santiago and the Compostela

• The Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago is not accessible for wheelchairs as it up a flight of stairs on the first floor. On arrival, if a disabled pilgrim cannot get up to the office, they should seek assistance or send a helper to ask one the staff to come down to the pilgrim.
• If a pilgrim with disabilities makes as much effort as is reasonably practicable to make the pilgrimage with as much help as is needed and if their motives are spiritual, then they will receive a Compostela. However, each case will be considered on its merits.
• The Pilgrim’s Office is neutral about support vehicles and whether or not pilgrims carry anything themselves. The only requirement is that they walk (or journey in their wheelchair for example) for the last 100 km. peregrinossantiago.es/eng/contacto/#
