I’m planning on heading out on the Napoleon route tomorrow and am curious about the weather and trail conditions up there today.

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).
I’m not there yet, but the forecast looks terrible. An acquaintance was up there 2 days ago having spent the previous night at Borda and walking out in the morning. Around mid-day he said the Napoleon was closed but he was already at Leopoder and had to make his way to Roncesvalles in awful conditions. Given this information, I would choose the Valcarlos regardless of whether the Napoleon is open in the morning. The forecast is terrible until about May 5. My Baztan is about to be very soggy.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I'm excited to hear of your Baztan Camino. We've done the St Jean to Pamplona a couple of times now and have been debating on tackling the Baztan, Aragones, or Vasco. Will you be posting your comments as you do the Baztan? Many thanks.

A peregrino in Pamplona today who crossed on the 26th said there was minimal snow but it was muddy. A biker arrived in Pamplona today (28th) from SJPP and had no problems.

Go to the Pilgrim office and ask. If they say the Napoleon can be risky don't even try it. If the weather is bad in SJPP it will almost certainly be alot worse as you go up the mountain.

It was FABULOUS!! Not a breath of wind. Not a drop of rain. You could see for 100 miles. The trail was in great condition until about 2km after the food truck. It was VERY muddy for quite a ways—passable but slippery and i was just filthy by the time the day ended. I also made the mistake (a moment of not paying attention) and took the steep, rocky descent through the forest instead of the more gradual path to the right at Loepoder ( or however you soellthat) to getvto Roncesvalles. It was steep and muddy and slippery. Taking the other route would have been much smarter. But it was an absolutely glorious day. I am so happy i got to do it.

Eeeek, the forest path…

Alls well that ends well, though

Happy you had such a great day today

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
I hope you have a terrific walk. I haven't looked at the weather report. Things seem to change so fast.

Maybe? It depends on whether I decide tomorrow to pop in an eSIM…
It is more likely that I will do a summary at the end (when I get a SIM in Pamplona to carry on to other routes).
