Cost of luggage transfer on the Francés

Hi I have just quoted my backpack transfer with corres from SJPP to Santiago. 667 euro total, which is almost aud$1000.
Can anyone recommend a cheaper company who are reliable please?
Mobility issues prevent me from carrying own pack. Thanks

Beginning in Spain at Roncesvalles, check into JacoTrans. I have used them several times on the CF. I didn’t look up their charges, but it should cost around €8/stage. Correos should be pretty competitive. Are you sure you got their fee correct? Seems higher than they charge and I know many pilgrims use them.

From SPJJ to Roncesvalles, Express Bouricot can get your pack into Spain to Roncesvalles or Burguete. From there on, JacoTrans and Correos are two very utilized transfer services. As for JacoTrans, my experience with them has been very positive.

We usually stay in private albergues or small hotels or hostels. We’ve never had any pickup or delivery problems. There may be some restrictions regarding municipal albergues that someone else on this Forum can speak to.

Not all albergues will accept baggage transfers. There has been recent discussion on this here. If you are staying in private albergues, hostels, casa rural or hotels you should be fine. Otherwise it is less clear, and albergues staffed by already hard working volunteers might not have the capacity to deal with baggage transfers.

This looks like the figure that the Correos provides if you do not enter a start date of 1 Apr 2023 or later, but leave it set at the date you opened the form. If I set a date after 1 Apr 2023, from Roncesvalles to Santiago, the quote that I get from them is 175 euro. This might make a difference to your thinking here.

We have used Correos on a number of Caminos and they were certainly very reasonably priced.
We used them last year to walk three Caminos and from Santiago to Muxia/Finisterre and the TOTAL cost for two people with two backpacks came to less than your quote! The cost of the Frances from Roncesvalles to Santiago was 300 euros for two people with a backpack each. We used Express Bourricot between St Jean and Roncesvalles. We stayed in a mixture of Albergues, hostels, pensions, casa rurals and hotels. Correos list all the accommodations that they pick up and deliver to on their website, so you can check before booking. On two occasions we couldn’t see accommodations on their list that we wanted to stay at, so we emailed them and got a prompt reply assuring us that they did pick up and deliver from those accommodations.
We found Correos very efficient and easy to deal with.

Charges can be from €5 up depending on how many bags they're transferring.
(I take groups) I'm sure it's not THAT much more for an individual.
Even as much as €8/stage for 33 stages it's under €300.
I'd be curious who you are dealing with who is charging you so much?

Once you get to Sarria, you can get transport for as little as $3/stage from other companies.

Hi Jacotrans are very good and reliable. One thing to watch out for though - if you go off season (say Oct to March, but you need to check this), you will find that the cost through Jacotrans is much higher, about E 25/leg as I recall. During Correos (post office), I think end March or early April, and got the impression that they only operate during the 'high season'. Actually it has some logic as during off season they have almost no takers at all, so it's like taking a taxi for a single bag I guess.

My wife and I own Albergue Casa Banderas CasaBanderas.com between Sarria and Portomarin and last year all the transport companies charged 4€ per bag. I’m sure the price will continue to rise secondary to inflation and higher costs of fuel.

The Correos booking site relies on start and end points, not on the number of days. Other service providers might differ.

Correos, indeed alows you to make more stops for less money. It is particularly advantageous to us slow walkers who like to do 20km or less per day, and even take a few days 10kms as rest days. Start Roncevalles

And Yes, put in dates fro April 1st to get correct pricing.

The only comment I would make is that, if you are intending to stay at a Council run Albergue (think O'Cebriero) OR certain Albergues connected to a religious fraternity (Think, Albergue de Perigrinos San Nicolas de Flue @ Ponferrada) those Albergues may ? (In my case did) refuse to accept my pack.

In the O'Cebrierio case I had to go searching around the village as they were shrugging their shoulders.
In the case of Ponferrada one of the resident perigrinos pointed me in the direction of the cafe facing the Albergue across the car park on the other side of the main road.

@Anne&Pat thanks very much. Not sure how to private message. I have booked Corres. Once itinerary is complete, can you edit and modify dates yourself? So far I have had to email corres to make any changes which doesnt really work well for me.

The Correos website says that you can change your itinerary on their website. Also, it's not necessary to make a complete itinerary before you start. You can let the know day by day.

The Paq Mochila can be booked through the online form at the top of this page. The process is very simple: just fill in the required fields and make the payment, by credit card or PayPal.

For online booking we only need to know which stage or stages of the Camino de Santiago you are going to walk, on what date you are going and the location of your first hostel or hotel. Next:

• If you have already planned all your stages and you also know the hostels and/or hotels you will be staying at, after making payment you can specify these and all your transfers will be arranged.
• If you still don't know which hostel, guest house or hotel you are going to stay in, it's okay. You will be able to access your booking at any time and specify your accommodation. The service must be booked before 8:00 pm the day before the transfer.
