camino frances start SJPP 15. may 2018
Hi Im new! sitting in a hostel room in SJPP and wondering about what route to take. Start on tuesday (15 th). The pilagrim info talked about snow and cold weather but said it was up to me what to walk. Rec the lower route but didnt say that the other one was unsafe. The man that workes in the pilagrim shop said that there was no problem with the Napoleon route and rec that route. Now I have the coming up chill !! should I or shouldnt I ??? if anyone knows that feeling. I mostly want to leave now not to sit here and think. Well if anyone has been walking there last days in the mud and snow how is it? Im used to cold weather and snow

Walked up to Orisson from SJPP today 5/14. Sun came out on the way up. Around 12 pm it started raining and now it is so foggy that you cannot see the valley below. About 8 degrees. Typical mountain weather forever changing. No idea what’s going on further on up.

Once the clouds clear, they views are absolutely stunning. If the pass is doable, it is absolutely the best option. The only caveat is the effort to walk UP the first 8 - 10 km. That is why so many of us try to stay at Orisson the first night.

We stayed at Orisson last nig

We stayed Orisson last night. Took 5.5 hrs to get to Roncesvalles today on a steady medium pace, slow on hills. Too cold to stop for long. We experienced sun, strong wind in places, dense fog for much of it, light rain came and went. There is a light amount of snow on top. Mud in one area. I was very nervous but it is quite manageable, well sign posted, never felt in danger, walkers in front and behind, just sometimes disappearing from view for short periods due to the fog.
Rain trousers, poncho, gloves, beanie worked well.
Would not have missed it for anything.
It could be different conditions tomorrow.
Whatever you decide, have a great day.

Hi Evita

Thanks for your post. I'm in the same boat! I've heard a few people say that there is snow but checking that sites suggested in another post (thank you Kathar1na) it looks like tomorrow is going to be a better day than today was.

What time were you thinking of leaving tomorrow. I'm also travelling alone and was hoping to hike out with someone.

Buen Camino,
Natasha

Some advice , before you leave go to the Pilgrim Office and ask how it is up the mountain .
Than you know how the condition of the Napoleon route is .

Wish you well and Buen Camino , Peter .
Hi Peter,

Thanks for that info. I was thinking of heading out about 7 am. Are they open at that time?

Thanks
Natasha
