Sharonih,

There is one albergue in Valcarlos and several casa rurals.
See all as cited on this Gronze.com list.

The municipal albergue is great and you can reserve there. Nearby the Casa Marcelino has good food and also rooms.
The Valcarlos municipal has few beds so a reservation is safest.

At times the camino path diverges off the road into the wood; in winter weather I always followed the roads parallel to the path. The roads are fine but do walk on the left-side verges facing traffic.

If you walk at dawn/dusk wear something bright and carry your light to flash towards on-coming traffic.

Between SJPdP and Valcarlos there is only one place for food/water/petrol near the old frontier; between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles there is no place for food nor potable water. Be prepared!

Good luck and Buen camino!

Thank you so much for the information this is great and much appreciated.

I will figure out how to translate the site to English or learn a bit more Spanish but this looks amazing. I am trying to see if there is an App for this, do you know of one?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hi there
Curious to understand the date yo are heading out from SJPdP? A mate and I (both from Australia) are planning to leave SJPdP on 19 march via Valcarlos route (as Napoleon closed). We are both first timers to the Camino. May see you on the journey!

That would be great, we are intending to leave SJPdP on the 15th of March, so we will probably meet up as we are planning to do a slow Camino walking roughly 20 km per day except for the first and 2nd day as they will be shorter days.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Another March walker (and first time pilgrim) here - I fly to Biarritz 21st March but arrive in the evening, so plan to stay overnight in Bayonne before getting the mountain railway to St Jean on the 22nd. Depending on timings, I may walk to Val Carlos that day, or overnight in St Jean.

Anyone know how much ascent there is from St Jean to Val Carlos? I can’t find this anywhere, and that feeds into how long the walk will take me.

Muchas gracias! Also relieved to discover that the record I have of the time I climbed Mount Snowdon is in metres, not feet (as I thought), and when I told someone that my second day would be like climbing Snowdon two and a half times, I was wrong (it’s less than once!)

Bonjour, Hi, my wife and I will also be starting the pilgrimage from SJPDP on the 17th of March. we plan to stop at Valcarlos as well. Perhaps we will see some of you all along the way.

Bien Camino

Just saw online that Casa Marcelino has permanently closed. Anything replace it as of April 2018?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I love the municipal there and watching all the elders of the village ‘hold parliament’ each night up in their clubhouse on the hill. What happened to the Brazilian albergue??
