Delays at Santiago airport?

Hi there,

I’m flying out from Santiago to Stansted tomorrow morning at around 11am, and received an email earlier today advising me to get to the airport 3 hours pre-departure “in case of security delays”.

I noticed media reports of airport delays over here while on my Camino, but I kinda assumed it would be more of a big city airport thing.

I’m leaning towards working under the assumption that the mail I received is a general one sent by Ryanair to all passengers flying out of Spain this weekend, and that it won’t apply to Santiago in practice, but obviously I don’t know that for sure… hence this thread!

So, just wondering does anyone know what the general situation is likely to be there tomorrow morning? Have there been problems in recent days?

And I don’t know if this will be relevant, but even though I’m flying to Stansted, I’m Irish and have an Irish passport and therefore am an EU citizen… as opposed to bring British.

Hi! I don’t know any detail but my guess it is a general email. Airlines for year have recommended that people get to the airport two hours pre departures (to the point where many people think it is is mandatory!!) and I think they have now increased it to 3 due covid and extra checks. As you are an EU citizen, presumably checked in, the only real variable you will have is at ‘bag drop’ assuming you are checking luggage in!

It’s also May Day across the world, so protests, parades, store/restaurant closures, labor shortages, and so on will be quite common this weekend (extending through Monday). I would not be surprised by delays in everything you face.

Yes good point and airlines will still be struggling somewhat post covid with resource allocation as this is the first normal mayday since 2019!

The delays (that I have read of) are mainly due to volumes of British travellers who now have to go through non EU security pathways in airports. I'd hedge your bets if I were you and aim for 2.5hrs pre flight

Maybe tho I think a lot of the stories re delays, passport lanes, e gates in UK are politically motivated and need to be taken with a pinch of salt. I.e leave media put one slant on things and remain another! I hold both Irish passport and UK passports and notice very little difference in clearing immigration. Every airport seems to run slightly differently! Not a political post btw as have no interest in the subject!

Nationality can be important in connection with air travel, but generally when getting into a country, not out. I’ve no great appreciation of Ryanair’s capabilities in any respect, but they clearly know where you’re flying from and to and I doubt they’re going to send ‘blanket’ messages.

Be checked in and ready for security two hours before departure is standard advice these days. Three at a small airport seems like a lot; but someone’s decided to tell you just that. You’ll know Santiago’s departures area pretty well by the time you take off.

It went fine. No problems whatsoever. I tend to arrive at airports early anyway, so it was no great hardship to get there even a little earlier than I ordinarily would. I would always rather have more time than I need rather than less. In an airport, boredom is a luxury! As it happens, I have even more of that luxury at my disposal now, as I am currently staring at the walls in Stansted, with my connection flight back home to Ireland not due to leave for another 4+ hours. Oh well!

Nice one! Thought it would be l. I do think the email is a generic one, as the overriding message is the same irrespective of origin… ‘get to the the airport a little earlier’ as segmenting the messaging would take a lot of work and cost!

Four hours would be tolerable albeit annoying. Come autumn, I have an eleven hour lay over in Dublin! Anyone have a secret place in DUB where I can hole up and sleep inside the airport?
