Desperate for advice on SIM card matters

Hi I am from New Zealand and doing the coastal Camino on the 21st May. I would like someone to advice the best SIM card to get in order to keep in touch with NZ and also for immergency calling and data use as well.

Emergency: 112 is the number that you can call for emergency services, without any tariff plan. In other words, free.

you have a few days. Go to your current provider, shop or whatever. Tell them what you are planning, and ask them for first advice.

wifi is almost universal now, so you can use Skype, and WhatsApp, and email, within a wifi zone. Now, I leave more practical and informed information to those who have it. And before mobile phones? Peace.

I have used Tuenti all caminos throughout Spain, best deal and coverage for me.
It seems that the closest place to buy their Sim card is in Bilbao (www.tuenti.es), appx 100 km or 4 days from Irun if you start there.

As Kirkie said, wifi is nearly everywhere so...

But if it is important for you to be able to call or have internet access in between, to give you an idea, for 6 Euros / month you have 1.5 Gb with unlimited voice calls using their app on selected country, incl. land lines in New Zealand.

Or for 10 Euros > 4 Gb same unlimited calls.

They also have online support in English.

It's about Camino Portuguse, the Coastal route.

Not too long ago, a forum member suggested that: Get the Vodafone traveller package. 5 gig of data, 100 min of calling in Portugal and 30 min overseas. This package will cost €20 and no problem using it in Spain. Use Whatsapp to keep in contact with your kids. With data on they and you can call just like a regular phone. Make sure your phone is unlocked."

I also bought a Vodafone SIM card in Pamplona last year with the traveller package. You must have your passport with you to avail of this offer. I used wifi whenever I could (between albergues and bars, I had access to wifi every day) but was confident that I had enough data to use when I needed it, and call minutes when I wanted to book an albergue. I used email and WhatsApp to stay in touch with NZ. As I was staying more than one month, I renewed online with Vodafone for €20.

Just be sure to use the WhatsApp settings to change your WhatsApp number to the number of the new SIM once it has been activated. You can change it back once you put in your original SIM.

This isn't necessary. Your WhatsApp account name can remain whatever it was when you first set it up. My WhatsApp name is my Canadian cell number. It remains that number when I use a Spanish sim card that has a different phone number. @peregrina2000 can also testify that she continued to use her US WhatsApp number with a Spanish sim card.
