i am arriving into madrid about 11 am on a friday....do i have time to get to roncevalles that day or do i stay the night at Pamplona , then next day to Roncevalles? also do i take a subway (is that the metro?) from Midrid airport to ? and then get what bus? would like a fast but inexpensive way to get there other than flying which is I assume is more expensive. Also what is the big deal of starting at roncevalles...wouldn't it be easier to just start at pamplona...or am I missing something i shouldn't ....many questions !

There are frequent buses from Madrid to Pamplona. You can get the schedule here: http://www.alsa.es
There is a daily bus from Pamplona to Roncesvalles at 18:00. There is information at www. roncesvalles.es

We got a much cheaper rate by taking a connecting flight from Madrid to Pamplona, than we would have had to spend taking, first the metro to Madrid centre and then the bus to Pamplona. We are due to arrive at about 11.30 a.m. and we could not, in any case have made the connection to Pamplona overland in time to take the only bus of the day bus to Roncevalles. I don't know if this depends on they airline with which you fly to Madrid, because our transatlantic is with Iberia. Maybe we got a special deal. I don't know for sure. Anne

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

The bus to Pamplona does not work out with my schedule, but i heard that you can take the Continental Autobus to San Sebastian...stay the nite and then in morn take a bus to Bayonne and then to St. Jean. seems easier than going thru Pamplona. Does anyone know about this way and where do i get the Continental Autobus and also, does one normally need to make reservations on buses and or trains ahead of time?

The bus is not the only option from Pamplona. You can get a taxi for about 30-40 euro which would be less expensive and faster than what your other options would be.

You can also fly to San Sebastian, take a taxi to Hendaye (about 3 km from the airport) & from there take the train to Bayonne. I think you only need reservations for the train & bus if you are traveling a popular route and/or on a national holiday. I've always lucked out & have been able to walk up to the ticket counter & get a ticket for the train or bus I need.
