Do I really need a sleeping bag?

I've packed up my pack, but have no room for the fleece sleeping bag liner that I wanted to bring. I do have a silk sheet liner, but am worried that it won't be enough if the nights get chilly. Do I need to find room for the fleece sleeping bag liner?

I'd nix both, the sleeping bag will be more than enough to keep u warm, believe me. Buen Camino :arrow: xm 8)

To make my post a bit clearer than mud I was planning to use the fleece liner as my sleeping bag & the silk liner on nights when it was too warm to use the fleece.

Help me out here, dg & jeff001, not too savvy at this. As I understand it, both refer to a liner, which am interpreting as being apart from the sleeping bag, itself. My suggestion is, no liner. Nixing them, she would still have the sleeping bag. Or not?

Assuming, as I am, that both r separate from the sleeping bag, I wouldn't take them, because 1) I believe the sleeping bag would be enought when it's cold. 2)You can sleep on it when it's not. 3) Something less to take.

Hmm...k, dg,I think, mayyybe :? , I understand . I'd discard liners :x , and take a mini mini , very very light , sleeping bag :lol:, just a suggestion...

There were blankets in most albuges we stayed in. And pillows...but I had to wonder about how clean they were.

My wife and I took a fleece liner and a silk sleep sack. The fleece is rated to 50F and the liner adds another 10 to 15 degrees. . . and did not take up much more room than a pair of shocks. Plus it had a pillow cover built in. After the first night I just left my liner in the fleece bag. Took up less room.

Look through you stuff, see if you can put something in something. Or take something out.

Pack light. Pack lighter.

I am sure there is something you won't use. There are stores all along the Camino where you can buy stuff. But you need to sleep well.

Thanks, Jerry. I'll do that. Perhaps getting some sort of sleeping bag holder & attaching it to the bottom of my back pack would suffice? I'm a bit limited on what's available in the stores in town. The silk liner has a spot for a "pillow" (easily can use clothes for that, so no need to take one of those). I'll go back & see if there's anything I can cut out, but at this point I'm stumped as to what that would be.

Hi DG, what confused me was that the original question you made, at the top, read: Do I really need a sleeping bag? Then, in re-reading ur posts, I realized that the question was not re: the merits of taking or not a bag, but rather about which liner to take, and that the bag had already been ruled out. Thus, my confusion. Am a "sleeping bag" person myself, that's why I jumped in. Liners or bag, a choice among choices. Am glad this seems to have been solved for u. Buen Camino, xm 8)

Wolverine! Calm down! Last year, I had to buy everything again as my bag didn't arrive with me. Ended up buying a cheap, though small sleeping back from El Corte Ingles and that did the trick. wasn't quite as easy to pack as my trusty down sleeping bag, but it did the job.

As has already been mentioned, most places have blankets as well, so accommodate for any extra warmth. Fear not...

Minkey, your experience is why my boots will be on my feet on the plane, instead of another, lighter pair. Whatever gets checked it is stuff I can easily replace, but my boots? No way. 8)

I do as u do, dg, take my Camino gear on/with me on the plane. Had a terrible experience last year when my luggage got lost-eventually found when I had replaced most all. Another lesson for the road...Best, xm

The only trouble with that is not being able to take walking poles on board. Boo hiss.

Anyway, xm, being in Miami, what sort of time do you have to get up to be able to post on the forums with us Europeans?!

And not just walking poles, Minkey. Now we can't take toothpaste or shampoo or anything liquid that's more than 3 ounces because that could make the plane go >>boom<< :roll:

My backpack is going on board with me, along with the stuff that I can take on board, but the walking pole & liquids are riding in the hold. So if that goes walkabout, I'll at least have my pack, my boots, & my shoes.

Aha... Good idea, hombre. Hadn't thought about splitting my stuff up. I don't know about you, but I'm fairly sure my toothpaste doesn't go boom... But I may be very wrong.

Actually, you can take your walking sticks on the plane (from the US, anyway). See http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm. At least, I got away with taking one folding walking stick in my carry-on two years ago. I've never tried it with a pair. I think they allow them because some people actually need them to walk around the airport.

No problem ever bringing a pole (or poles, one time I raided the first floor of the Pilgrims' Office, where many pilgrims leave theirs & brought a bunch of them), home. I just wrapped it up and checked it in. That's it. It is nice to have my "best friends" all over my house, good reminders of beautiful Caminos! Best, xm 8)

My walking pole retracts, but to just under 2 feet. Since it's made out of metal, I don't want to run the risk of encountering the rogue TSA person who wants to make things up as he/she goes along. Also, since I'm flying out of the small, local airport, they are more picky about what goes through & what doesn't. I've had my quart-sized bag completely ignored in Houston & Washington, but in my hometown, they do everything but take my stuff out of the baggie & measure it! :evil: So, I'm erring on the side of caution & checking a bag.

Should it disappear en route, I have travel insurance, & I'm not married to anything I'm checking anyway.

Well, as long as I know that the pole(s) is/r traveling with me, one way or another, am ok with that.

There's a 6 hour diff (I think) between "my side" of the New, and the Old World.

When I wake up, say, 6 am, and check my mail as part of my cafe con leche morning ritual, u guys have already spent 1/2 a day at work and r close to lunch.

Then, throughout the day, I check my mail sporadically, particularly the Camino-related; let's say that it's a "survival skill" of sorts I've been able to "conjure" that helps me get through the work day in a Jacobean dream-like state.

I mean, mentally-wise, am not really here, "here." I'm there, "there," already walking somewhere in between Oloron-Somport, and with everyone that's on their way.

Right now, for example, 3:45 pm here, is 9:45 pm, there. It's daylight, sunny, and t-shirt hot. Am off-work, about to go train for an hour. But before doing that I like to connect with u guys for a bit of "emotional Jacobean support" to last me for the day, and some four weeks until I leave for Spain.

That type of support is basically one of the very meaningful things am getting from forum participation, as I share my experiences, anecdotes, suggestions, as well as hearing them from pilgrims like u, too. Being an experienced pilgrim u know what a "high" it is to read a post from someone who's embarking on the experience for the first time, feel their excitement, nervousness, hear the million and one questions (similar to the ones I had way back when), and more. Then, in being able to make suggestions that may bring clarity to their doubts, as well as support, hey, what a way to give back for how much we have gotten from the Caminos!

Then, there's also the pleasure of dialoguing with veteran fellow-pilgrims (open/privately) with whom I share a serious interest about the Jacobean tradition, what all is happening of present-day importance with/on the Caminos, learning about each other's cultures, things that come up like the "bully hospitalera" situation we are up in arms and what we're doing about it, and much, much, more.

One more check-in will take place between 9-10 pm, my time, 3-4 pm, ur time. It's geared towards guaranteeing dreaming with Camino angels :!:

This is not all set in stone, but it's pretty much what's happening.

I use a hostel bag. Very light down filled side and the other side is a sheet. My caminos have been June to October.
Modesty is ensured for those who worry about such things.
