Dublin to Biarritz 18th September 2018

Hi, I am planning on walking the full Camino St Francis. I am carrying everything and did not intend checking any luggage on my Ryanair flight FR1982 from Dublin to Biarritz (Tuesday 18th September). The discussions on carrying walking poles as hand baggage are mixed so there is a chance that mine will not be allowed. Ryanair have also recently changed their baggage rules which are now very confusing! Is there anybody on this flight would be willing to check my poles in with their baggage?

Good morning Braemore, If poles fit in your bag you can bring them through security at Dublin airport. In Santiago de Compostela they are checked into hold free of charge (flying with Aer Lingus) . This has been my experience over a few years, however change of regulations is always possible.

Hi Braemor,

Anyone carrying luggage for stranger is frankly a fool. Ireland to Spain might not exactly be a red hot drug trafficking route but given that pretty much the first thing you used to be asked when checking in (and now presumably lies in the small print of online check-in) was "are you carrying anything for anyone else?" I would certainly not be doing this.

Think your best bet would be to email them direct, I agree their online information is not at all helpful. If you're going to be relying on goodwill at the airport I'd suggest you put rubber tips on your poles so they look less menacing, this also has the bonus that you won't drive yourself and everyone else crazy as you click along the road sections.

No, and I can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone with poles visibly attached.

Fair point Rob if a random person walked up to you in the airport and asked you to carry something for them. Which is why I am trying to pre-arrange!

Looks like packing them in my bag is the best way to go (and cross my fingers!) I will attach the rubber ends plus use some bubble wrap to stop the poles destroying my backpack.

Not wanting to bang on about it (apparently I actually do, but I do feel bad for doing so), but asking members of an internet forum that you've been a member of for less than three hours is pretty much the same thing.

To save hassle buy a cheap pair in sjpp they are plenty of shops selling them, 8-10 euro then dispose off as you will.

I would suggest you leave your poles at home and buy new ones in St. Jean at the start of your walk. They're relatively cheap, and when you finish you can leave them for another pilgrim to use so you won't have to carry them home. I did this and it gave me great pleasure! Buon Camino
