I will be arriving at 12.30pm in Bayonne on a Monday. Is it possible to get to SJPP that same day as soon as possible?
I was wanting to arrive in SJPP and start my walk to Orission all in the same day. Is this possible?
Want to reserve a spot there, but not sure if I will be able to do this. Maybe I can get a taxi right away as soon as I get to Bayonne..

But if you really want to get there extra quick there are taxis outside and €80 should have you there in about 45 mins . Or you can take it easy and go over the top in one go. Most people do, just relax you will enjoy it much more.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

You sound super-eager to start walking......why not walk the path from Bayonne to Saint Jean? It's a gentle way to start a camino; no stressing about when to arrive! Just a lovely walk.

Hi Jenn, there's a train from Bayonne at 2:55pm which arrives in SJPP at about 4:10pm. You can walk to the pilgrim's office by 4:30pm, and you could be walking to Orisson by about 4:50pm (depending on how many people are ahead of you to register at the pilgrim's office). However, that steep walk to Orisson takes about 3 hours. I've done it three times and it hasn't gotten easier yet, haha! Let's say you got to Orisson by 8pm... dinner would already be happening when you arrived (and you'd likely want to take a shower), and it would be a long day over the mountain the next day to Roncesvalles after having walked into the evening the night before. You could take a taxi. I've read that it's pretty pricey (80-100 euros?), but if you really want to get started the same day, it's an option!

I stayed at Orisson my first year, and it was a good choice. The second and third times I've walked, I went all the way to Roncesvalles in one go. It took me about 9-9.5 hours including rest breaks.

Buen Camino, whatever you decide! :)

You could look at Express Bouricott taxi based in SJPdP they try to infill their minibus to reduce individual costs. Maybe someone has already booked it for your time. Though I feel that it would be a pity not to spend some time in St Jean and meet fellow pilgrims.

I'm excited for you, Jenn! And you'll get a bright and early start after your sleep in Bayonne. That will help you with jet lag if you're flying over from Florida as your profile info suggests. It's taken me about 5-6 days to get over it in the past, and I've found that the homeopathic jet lag remedies you can buy are helpful.

The first year when I stayed at Orisson was interesting... I booked three months in advance, thinking that was plenty of time for mid-September, but the rooms inside were already all full! I was so surprised to get an e-mail reply in Canada saying that I'd be in one of the overflow tents on the hillside behind the main building (I don't know if they still have these or not), I asked a French friend of mine to telephone for me to confirm it. He called overseas from California, bless him!

And it was raining that day, haha! We were a soaking wet, sorry-looking group of pilgrims who straggled in from SJPP that day! There's a cute photo of me and the somewhat disbelieving expression on my face when I realised that I was actually going to be sleeping outside in a tent in the pouring rain, with someone I'd never met before. :D But it was beautiful... all night I got to enjoy the sound of rain on the roof of the tent, along with the lovely music of cow bells jingling in the dark. And I'm still friends with some of the other people who stayed there that night too!
