First Timer Oct 2010

Hi All,

I'm Robin from California and looking to start my camino in early Oct. Does anyone know generally about weather conditions ?, any less crowded ? tour co./ wing it on my own ? I'm totally new to this whole process but totally excited. I also can't seem to pry myself off this forum, so much good info. I feel like all of a sudden I have a whole bunch of new really great friends.
Any one else going in Oct.? Is Oct. not an advisable time to go?

I've walked the Frances during October.

It will be colder, a bit more wet, but much less crowded and the walking is pleasant if you are prepared. From where will you begin?

You have some time before you journey along the Way. Here's some things to check out:

- Look at FAQ on top right. Lots of good scoop.
- Check out the links on the Camino you might take
- Use the search tab. Just type in key word...Pack...boots...SJPDP...etc.

All the searching can be fun.

Hi Robin,

I also am a first timer (from Sydney). I'll be leaving Roncevalles on Sept 21, but not reaching Santiago until near the end of Oct., as I want to have several days break in Leon. I'm hoping the weather will be reasonably good, between the heat of summer & the rain of Nov., but I guess there's bound to be some misearable days.
I have started training & walk 30 km 3 times a week. That's OK, but once I do it with a full pack, it seems infinitely harder. I'm wondering whether I'm going to end up incredibly fit, or if my ankles are going to give way permanently. Now that I've started walking, I feel that I have to keep at it, or lose the benefits I presumably have gained so far.
All the best with your walk, what could possibly go wrong?

Hi Jonathan

While out hiking today I started thinking about my training plan too. By Sept. I want to work up to walking 12 miles each friday and sunday with saturday being a little longer. Then add whatever miles I can fit in during the work week. I figure doing some back to back days will help with endurance. Then the week before I leave I will taper off as to let my body rest, so I don't start out already fatigued. I'm doing yoga too for injury prevention. This may all change down the road, but this is the plan for now.
It's exciting you have so much time to walk. This first trip I have 2 weeks and will probably begin towards mid Oct., maybe leaving from St. Jean, I'm still not sure.
