Dear all,

On October 12th 2004 I set up this forum and posted my first posts. The forum software I installed back then was the best there was (I thought), and it has served us well.

But in the last few years it has gotten more and more difficult to keep the forum up to date, more members and posts complicates it. It seems like the forum software we have installed has stopped adding features and has gotten "old". So, I have lately been looking for an alternative software that we can use, and I think I have found one. A few weeks ago I installed this new software and did a test. I moved all our 143.000 posts and 25.000 members over into a test installation and it worked great. This new software has a lot more features that we currently have (I will explain a bit more below) and I am really excited.

The moderators and I have been poking around in the new system a few days, and it looks great.

The good
-- Anti spam: The anti spam system that we currently use is "hacked" together, and it seems to work, but this new software has a better system that is more stable.

-- Mobile app: Since the previous software was not up to date, the forum app had some defects. (The not being able to send PMs was one). This will now be solved.

-- New feature, Camino Resources: More and more people have camino related products to promote/sell, and so far it has been mixed in with the questions and other conversations in the forum. This new forum software will have a special section (Camino Resources) that will be divided into categories. Here users (you) can create and maintain a camino resources.... this could be a hostel, a pdf guide you have created or a camino book you have written. You can present it and also manage updates to the resource (if it is a pdf for example). One product, one resource. The good thing is that this is a separate section from the forum and that each resource is managed by the user. Users can leave comments and rate each resource.

-- If you are using a mobile device (and not using the forum app), the new forum will be optimized for your device (responsive design).

The bad
-- New design, buttons move: After years of using the same software we have gotten used to where the buttons are. With this new forum software, the buttons might have moved... but not very far! :) I hope that you get used to it after a few days of using it.

So when will be move over to this new software? I hope some time late next week... my plan is to do it next friday (august 9th) and use the weekend to make sure everything works as it should. the forum should only be down for a about 1-2 hours (that was the time it took when I did the test-move).

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know what is coming up... adding some screenshots of the new forum below.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Greetings from Santiago,
Ivar

Great Ivar. I think the "new" buttons won't be such a problem. And the Camino Resources part is great idea also.

But I couldn't helped myself noticing in one of the screenshots that Ginger from Chicago is planing to walk Casino Frances

Thanks so much for all the effort you put into maintaining the forum, Ivar. It looks very good, but

If you are using a mobile device (and not using the forum app), the new forum will be optimized for your device (responsive design).
I hope there's an option not to do this--on my ipad I hate being forced into a mobile version of a site, so if there's a way to allow mobile devices to choose the full site instead (usually a link to go to the full version someplace on the mobile site home page), please enable that.

EDIT Meant to say, if there's an easy way to do that. If it's a hassle (anything more strenuous for you than just turning on a checkbox, say), please don't sweat it. I'm just grateful for any version of your site.

In this case it does not take away any content, it actually looks exactly the same, only the text does not get very small and it looks good on a mobile device... I do not like it when sites gets "dummed down" for mobile devices.. this is not the case case here. You see exactly the same on a mobile device as on the computer... but it does not look bad on the mobile device.. You will see once we have it up and running.

Every time I think I'm taking on too much in life, something comes along to remind me that I'm really an indolent sort who with much application might actually achieve something useful or productive on this mortal coil, thanks Ivar and the moderators for what must have been many long hours of teasing out bugs and glitches and best wishes on the switchover. Really like the idea of being able to 'like' posts in future.

I always view upgrades of any sort with a good bit of trepidation, since I'm one of those gray-haired luddites. But, Ivar, if you're looking for an idiot to test the new site, I'm happy to oblige. I am frequently put on the Technology Committee where I work, not because I have any expertise but just because I am so totally inept with technology. My IT director uses me as the lowest common denominator. If I can figure out what he is telling us to do, he knows the rest of the faculty and staff will have no problem. :)

buen camino, Laurie

and p.s., as always, thanks to Ivar for all the help and support of this great resource!

Yes it has gone very well so far. Just a suggestion to put at the bottom of your "To DO" list Ivar. There is a "Top" button on the blue bar at the bottom of the thread. Perhaps something at the top to take people to the bottom would be useful as they are probably wanting to go to the latest posts if a thread has been active for a while.

Hi Ivar,
thanks for your outstanding work on this forum!
One sad thing is, since the reorganisation my Tapatalk 4.0 Android App is not working with the forum anymore. This forum was the reason for buying the App...
Is there a chance it will work again?
Thanks! - sternenstrasse

Ivar,
This has probably been asked previously so please be patient.

I can't work out how to search for older threads. For example, I've been trying to keep up with the Class of 2014 thread. When I enter the title in the "Search" area at the top of the page and select search from my keypad nothing happens.

Is it because I'm using an iPad?

Thanks
John

No need to reply Ivar. I've found the watch thread option.

whiskey is a foreign substance. In Scotland we make and drink whisky. I still don't understand the points system or why there isn't a "I don't like you" button so I can press it when Ivar doesn't buy me a beer.

On a serious note I generally find change quite difficult and a change to the forum is no less challenging - that doesn't mean I don't appreciate hugely Ivar's efforts to keep providing pilgrims everywhere with a stable forum to discuss matters and ask questions.

I love the whole look of the new interface- and so much easier to make comments too. I am still working out some of the ins and outs of watching or not watching threads etc, but I'll get there eventually. However, now I am going to leave you to cry into the beer you don't have that Ivar never bought for you, and go out for a long morning's walk in the countryside. Spring is beginning to sprung here - might even see some wee lambies!

Thanks Ivar -

I've checked out their website - it's very impressive. Did you have to modify their template much to get what you needed for this forum?

It's got to be the best forum site I've visited. I used to be active on the www.dpreview.com forum site, (for digital photography), but that is so cumbersome.

Also, it's inhabited by some pretty nasty people.

Your forum, by and large, is populated by generous and very supportive folk!

(there are a few crusty ones!)

I have just noticed that threads which were moved from their original position, such as in FAQs, to the correct forum before the changeover which had a shadow link in the old forum lost their shadows during the changeover. As nobody has commented about this I assume it has not caused any problems. The new software allows us to set a number of days a shadow link (a thread with a blue arrow showing it has be redirected and no number of replies or last message by ...) will remain in the old forum and this will normally be for 30 days.

Ivar:

Regarding the daily email of new posts. The post that shows under yesterday's date is actually the first email posted under each tread. Example in today's email under Forum Upgrade what I see is your comment about the approval by Apple for the upgrade which was actually dated Aug. 16 not Aug. 22nd. Is this correct or not? It is the same for all the posts. It has been this way for me since the upgrade was installed.

Ivar, maybe it is just tired eyes but -- once the other needs are tended to -- could you consider making the text for the date of the initial post one shade darker on the topic menu page (not sure the right term for that)? The initiating date seems to disappear into the background at the current percentage. I have been noticing how few bedbug posts there are this year. Now that thread is active again and I, for one, had read quite a few posts before I started paying attention to the posting dates. The original post is actually from 2008. It seems much progress has been made in tackling this issue.

Hope you are having a restful vacation.

Great idea! Good luck on the cut-over. I have one suggestion to make that should help everyone. Could you/we expand the Camino Resources section to a fuller outline of all the generic questions asked again and again and again, and answered as much across all the form threads. For example: a sub-heading called backpacks - that expands to discuss various sub-topics under backpacks without repeating the general forum; or perhaps sleeping as a generic sub-title, with expanding subtitles for bags, liners, air mats, tents, etc.; also a subtitle for insects, under which but one subtitle would be bedbugs then mosquitoes, etc. Perhaps a moderator would volunteer to head one subject area, monitor all incoming forum postings - perhaps a keyword sorting could send the posting to the correct moderator from your end - then the moderator would move the new posting to the correct Resource sub-category.

I know it sounds like a lot off work, but it would save a lot of user resource when trying to locate a specific piece of information. The forum is a great tool. However, as it becomes really, really popular, a lot of information is needlessly repetitious and t all gets lost in a stew of combined information.

Ulreia!

I have not tested it, but could it be that the ignore list only applies itself for newer content? Does the avatar show up on messages created before you ignored a user? I will have a look and see what I can find as well..

Hi there,

When you use the "Recent Post" link at the top it is important that you click the link each time you would like to see the the recent posts... refreshing the page does not work and bookmarking it will not work either. The link above is to this page:
http://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/find-new/posts?recent=1
...as soon as you click it, you are forwarded to a different url (a cached version of the most recent posts). To see an up to date list of the most recent posts, just click the "Recent Posts" link in gree at the top and you should be good to go.

The e-mails you get are the 30 most recent posts in the forum at 07.00 every morning (spanish time). We have more posts per day than that, so it will not show you all of them.

I hope this helps!
Ivar

Thanks again Ivar and LTfit.

I also just found out something else.
As soon as I click one of the new posts in the ´new posts´ part and go back to the new posts part, the post I read is not listed any more in my new posts list.
The ´New Posts´part seems to be personalized.

That is the reason why I never see my own posts and why not al posts are listed. I nearly thought my posts weren´t interesting enough to be listed

That's correct Thomas as it is no longer 'new' (i.e. already read). But if you do the same in 'recent posts' it will still show up.
I can only find 'new posts', where can I find the 'recent posts'?

Also at the top of the page next to Conversations at least if you are using a desktop/laptop.
Using the app is different. I just downloaded the latest version for iPhone and am still learning how to use as looks very different from the previous version. I believe the 'Timeline' function shows the most recent posts at least that is where I saw your last post.

Ivar, attached is the picture of an e-mail which I and Annakappa received today. It was immediately thrown into the garbage bin.
Any meaning here?

Received the same in my email fraluchi, didn't even realise I had a domain on the forum sounds rather Grand, so you believe it to be bin material?
Should we PM Ivar maybe?

...I was on mobile before... so let me explain.

I have set up this email reminder for expiring donations. I had one system up and running but it created some problems, so the other day I set up a different way of doing this. ...and it seems like I did not configure it correctly, and the "boiler plate" message was sent out.

The idea is that 7 days before a donation expires, the user will get a reminder by email. I will try to set this up again tomorrow... hopefully with more luck then... :)

Thanks!
Ivar

A brilliant idea, Ivar. It is obvious for any upgoing people that we should contribute in here. This is much more than just an ordinary forum to us: This is an important mind and spiritual resource, as well as a rich source to solve practicalities.

I would like to use the opportunity to once again say "Thank you, Ivar!"

I'm really liking the changes to the forum pages -- particularly the first phrase of the most recent posts on the right side. The rearrangement of the various pages is a space saver -- and makes it easier to find the thread I'm looking for. Well done and thank you!!

Hi, I cannot for the life of me manage to get this site on to my iPad as an app/icon/shortcut. I can only seem to access it via the daily email... Thank you Ivar...
What am I doing wrong. I can't find it in the App Store. I would just like to be able to open the iPad and hit the button.
Thanks a million

Hi there,

To add a "forum icon" to your iPad or iPhone, that take you to the website is easy. Here is what you do:

1) Go to the forum on your iPad or iPhone, https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community
2) Tap the square with the "up" arrow that you see at the bottom here:

3) Then you tap the "Add to Home screen" button (see below)

4) Then just tap "Add" (top right)

You should now have a yellow forum icon on your home screen. Tap it to go to the forum.

Please let me know if you had problems.

Buen camino!
Ivar
