France’s traditional summer sale for train tickets opens this week but passengers on the new high speed lines to the west will have to pay a little more for the quicker ride. Although there will be more promotions.
French rail chiefs SNCF announced on Monday that the price of tickets on the new high speed TGV services to Rennes and Bordeaux will rise.

The services are due to begin operating on July 2nd which will reduce travel time for Paris to Bordeaux from 3 hours 15 minutes to just 2 hours 4 minutes. Travel time from Rennes in Brittany to Paris will be cut from 2 hours 4 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes.

The price of a ticket on the new services will rise on average by between six and 10 euros, which SNCF believes represents a good deal for customers.

“We have succeeded in limiting the average price rise to 10 euros from Paris to Bordeaux and six euros from Paris to Rennes,” said Rachel Picard the head of Voyages SNCF.

With its new Bordeaux service, SNCF hopes to beat the competition from budget airlines by attracting passengers who would normally take the plane.

They are currently working out a plan on how to offer the best service possible to passengers, but there will be free WiFi on the trains and the new trains promise to make comfort the number one priority.

SNCF is hoping to pull in an additional 2.4 million passengers on the Paris to Bordeaux line in 2019 and 1.6 million on the Paris to Rennes service.

In future, travellers will also have their tickets checked before boarding the trains rather than during the journey.

As part of its summer sales season SNCF promise that there will be more promotions offering passengers cheap prices.
