Fun observation - "walking distance"

Just a little fun observation - my family and friends no longer believe me when I tell them that something is "walking distance" from where ever we are.

Them: "Should we walk or drive to the restaurant?"
Me: "It's just down the street, we can easily walk."
Them: "Is is REALLY just down the street? Or is if 5km away?"

:) :) :)

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
My pleasurable moment came when I was having a health check. There is a genetic heart abnormality that runs through my family. I was told to attend a coronary specialist for some tests. His office is about 15 kilometres from where I live. Would I drive there? Of course not! I chose to walk. Such fun.

All along the Camino there are enticing little signs and usually a directing arrow, "Cafe/Bar" 150 meters; "Restaurant" serving all day just around the corner; "Tienda" offering fresh vegetables, fruits, and bread two minutes walk; all easy walking distance, nothing at all, but we have learned, we all know, that if you can't actually see the establishment - don't go – in Spain meters and time are measured differently by different people .

I agree wholeheartedly. I remember thinking it was very, very odd to take a taxi to the Santiago Airport from town. My wife convinced me that the passengers sitting near us on the plane would appreciate it if we took a taxi, even though it was "just up the road".

We stayed in London for a couple of days after camino last year and walked from Marble Arch to the British Museum one afternoon. When we came out in the early evening we came out of a different entrance (however the back and front seem to have the same Facade). So we being quite unsure in which direction we should start to walk asked a young office worker going home, if she could direct us in the right direction to Marble Arch!
She looked at us both worked out we were past our sell by date and suggested the Oxford street Tube station! My wife replied "Oh no we prefer to walk," then the young lady said "well you can go along there, but it is a long way must be at least two miles." We both thanked her and arrived back at Marble Arch about 30 minutes later. Sometimes some people think just over a mile is a long way!!o_O

...and it probably would have taken longer than your 1/2 hour walk to find the underground station, go down, pay the fare, go down again, wait for the train, travel, get off and go up the escalators, try to find which exit you want, and finally breath "fresh air"!! :D Bravo for you!!!!

And the single fare, the best part of the cost of a menu del dia (on the Camino of course, not in London!).

30 minutes? I'm impressed! I live near Marble Arch and used to attend a class near the British Museum, and always enjoyed the walk, but never managed it in half an hour. I take my Tilley hat off to you!

In Spain, the gallegos (the inhabitants of Galicia) are famous by their particular sense of distance. Supposedly, If you ask a gallego how far is Compostela, he will answer "not very far, just the other side of the hill", even if you are in Sarriá. Or he may says "well, it depends", because apparently they discovered relativity way before Einstein. :)

That's probably because like us,you stopped off at that Trad London pub just before the St Christopher centre I think it's called king George or something like that. Then continued home! I didn't include that drinking time, in our estimations of about 30 minutes but we really enjoyed the walk home before and afterwards.

Next time you're on a mini-Camino in London give me a shout and we'll plan that second-hand walking boots business!

"Anywhere is walking distance, if you've got the time." (Steven Wright)

I love that.

Another thing I noticed is that when I am driving places and I see mileage signs for some place, like "Santa Cruz 15 miles", I think "Yeah, that's about a day's walk." I never considered walking to Santa Cruz before, but I would now.

Certainly will Metropolly, the London Camino sounds great, second hand boot business however could be a "Typical just when you thought you had it all figured out" , don't you think so?;)

Indeed. Perhaps Ivar could be persuaded to introduce a 'give it away' platform where we can all dump our unwanted boots/Goretex trousers/50-litre backpacks, so that someone who thinks they need them can take them off our hands, and discover for free how useless they are?
