On my first night on the Camino (Fall 2013), at Orisson, for dessert we were served a wonderful cream-filled cake. I have always thought it was a version of the Tarta de Santiago — until I just read this article https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20210708-the-basque-cake-made-with-a-280-year-old-water-mill. Now I wonder if that cake wasn’t, in fact, Gâteau Basque with the pastry cream.
Do you remember this cake? Is it still served at Orison. I don’t remember having it the second time I was there - Fall 2015. Was it, in fact, the Gâteau Basque?

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
It sounds like a Gateau Basque and it is made with a cream filling or a cherry and cream filling. My guess is someone was kind enough to bring one along with them after buying it in a bakery in SJPdP. If you do the same you will become a Camino hero!

In 2015 stayed at a private auberge in SJPdP which included dinner and breakfast. For dinner dessert they served gateau Basque. I had never had it before. I found it to be absolutely delicious. Also the next morning after breakfast the hospitalero led us in singing ultreia together. Very memorable.

While I don't know what they served on that day I would think that it was indeed a piece of cake that is typical for the Basque Country and not typical for a town that is as far away as Santiago.

Gâteau Basque was the very first food I ate when I arrived in SJPP ☺️, and it looked like this and I think they did ask me what kind of filling I wanted, and I opted for the one without cherries:

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Accueil Kaserna.
It was on the left side of the street as you exit town to begin the Camino. I remember it was not that far from the gate out of town.

Indeed, @Kathar1na, since this was my first Camino, I had virtually no idea until much later there was even a Tarta de Santiago - then I remembered that Orisson had something similar. The BBC article just brought back that memory...

Just ONE of the reasons I love returning to the Francés again and again, and take my time - to taste, see, learn about stuff I'd missed previously - or just want to experience again!! Now, of course, I want the one with the cherries!! ;-)

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
