Getting back to Madrid from Santiago

trundle

New Member
I was going to fly but I'm thinking that an overnight bus or train migh be a better option. It would save me a hotel night and would also be another potentially great experience.

Does anyone know the schedule, trip duration and cost for each? Also, was it a pleasant experience or something to be avoided??

Regards,

Hi there,
I took the Hotel Tren to Madrid and it was a pleasant trip. You can have a cabin with bedding which is better than sitting up in a bus. Try to book it beforehand in case the train is full on the night you want to travel.

Go to http://www.renfe.es
To do your search, open the window on the lower left side that says: Seleccione su idioma and click on English.
Do your search from Santiago to Madrid and you will see that the Hotel Tren leaves Santiago at 22h35 and arrives in Madrid at 07h45.
buena suerte,

We did the trenhotel yesterday and really enjoyed it. Be forewarned though that you cannot make online reservations for the bed at Renfe.es. You have to purchase the ticket at an office.

I learned this the hard way by buying the ticket online and then having to buy another ticket (with bed) when I arrived in Spain.

It ran about 95 Euros per person for a 2 person cabin. This is a bit expensive, but it is a great experience. Bad part is you basically get on the train, go to sleep, and wake up in Madrid. No real time to enjoy the train trip.

The train left about 10:30pm and arrived in Madrid about 7:30am

It's not a bad option. I've choosen it a couple of times. The last, two years ago.

And sometimes you have to choose not what you would prefer, but what is free. Or to book it several days ago, and this option doesn't let you to decide entirely about your time.

Buen Camino,

I did it in reverse, just two weeks ago. Trenhotel from Madrid to Santiago. It was wonderful - a great way to travel, I thought.

This is also an option for pilgrims traveling from or to Paris... the TrenHotel between Paris and Madrid. It stops in Burgos!
