Getting back to Paris from Santiago

So flying from Thailand... thought best place to land would be Paris. But how hard/expensive is it to get back to Paris from Santiago? Would it be better to fly in to Spain, just from the return point of view?

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
Iberia Airlines flies several times a day from Santiago to Paris, connecting through Madrid or Barcelona. The transit time is from four to seven hours, and the fare about 200E.

There is a bus three days a week. It takes about 24 hours and costs 189E.

Well, then it's a no-brainer for an extra 11E! Thanks.

In October 2011 took a direct flight from A Coruna to Paris with Vuelling airlines (part of Iberian). It was easy to take the train to A Coruna then airport bus and straight on plane for short flight to Paris. Quicker than flying via Madrid. Also I think there are direct flights 3 days a week from S de C to Paris - I went via Coruna because it was. It one of those 3 days.

If you can get one of those direct flights. I would go Barcelona Paris. Both are short flights.

I flew with Vueling Airlines from Santiago to Paris Charles de Gaulle . It was a direct flight of just over two hours from memory. I bought it a few weeks in advance and it cost me around $100 Australian. (I was also able to pay a few dollars extra to change the dates without penalty as I was unsure of when I would arrive in Santiago de Compostela. I was going to train it back but gave it a flick as I was not interested in a change of trains at Valladoloid (excuse the spelling) in the middle of the night.

It depends on how much time you have of course. You could always walk as you will be a seasoned experienced walker by that stage.

I did meet on my camino a number of pilgrims who were walking back to their home. (They looked very tired.)

I would suggest using London to stage your trip; its well connected to all of Europe.

As near as I can tell, flying from Santiago to Paris requires a transfer; there are no direct flights.

The train is an option. Santiago to Irun/Hendaye with Renfe. Irun/Hendaye to Paris with SNCF

There are buses though you may have to travel from bus hub to bus hub. Buses are probably the cheapest option. Alsa is a good resource.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Travelingpen:

Imo, yes.

Flying from Bangkok to Paris or Madrid in June 2014 is approximately the same price. Returning from Santiago to Madrid is much cheaper and quicker than Santiago to Paris. Unless you have a compelling reason to fly into Paris, I would recommend you fly round-trip to Madrid.

I assume you are planning on starting in SJPdP. If so, from Paris CDG arrange transport to Montparnesse train station. Take TGV train to Bayonne, then local train to SJPdP. If you choose Madrid, train or bus from airport to Pamplona, then bus or cab to SJPdP.

Go to skyscanner and plug in your dates and the airports.

The flights and prices will vary depending on dates/season. But if you book in advance the discount airlines tend to be cheaper then the trains etc. OTOH you need to watch the baggage limits.

Also if you're flying out of Europe I assume you'll be leaving DeGualle so you'll either want to fly into that airport or factor in the cost of the airport transfers. Paris has three airports. The one Ryanair uses is far away from the other two.

Also you could always open jaw. Arrive Paris leave from some place else.

I have booked an easy jet flight from Porto to Paris at the end of January. The flight cost, in round figures €55 - I will check my bag in, otherwise it is even cheaper! The bus from Santiago apparently goes daily to Porto for less than €30, and I gather it also goes via the airport. You need to book this a couple of days in advance. I will decide closer to the time whether I will go straight to the airport, or go the day before and have a mooch around Porto. All in all this was the cheapest, and least time consuming, option available - even with a night's accommodation in Porto. The Veuling and Iberian air options had no appeal as neither fly direct to Paris at a reasonable cost. Janet

For the record, Vueling/Iberia does sometimes have direct flights from Santiago to Paris (CDG), I remember paying about 200 Euros for mine, but I bought it at the airport 3 hours before the flight.

Mostly, when on the Camino, I don't like to pre-book. However when there is something such as return flight home to connect with I can't afford to take a chance with timing - which is why I have booked my connecting flight so early (and it is cheaper). I am anticipating a total cost of around €125 - 140 for my return journey to CDG (including a nights accommodation). Cheers Janet.

Thanks, but problem with using London, is that I'm on a South African passport, so would not only need a Shengen visa for Spain/France, but also a very costly visa for the UK... the joys of being on a South African PP. As it is, the Shengen is difficult.

Not sure why I though of Paris rather than Madrid... perhaps because everyone else seems to do that. But I started thinking about getting back again, hence the question.

My flight with Vueling was a direct flight from Santiago de Compostela to Parish Charles de Gaul airport. No transfers involved. Yep check it all out through sky scanner.com . That's what i did and it suited my circumstances.
All the best with your planning.

As an add on to my post above I also flew with Malaysian Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Paris and return. My flight arrived at 06:40 in Paris and this gave me plenty of time to catch a train to SJPD. As you are coming from Thailand this is an option you may wish to explore.
Cheers

We just returned from Camino earlier this month. Veuling airline flies direct flights from Santiago to Paris 3 times a week. It cost about 175 euros each. You might could get it cheaper if you booked ahead, but we went through travel agency once we finished camino. It was easier to do through agency since I don't speak any Spanish and had limited internet access in Santiago. Since we didn't know what date we would finish, I didn't try to book the flight before leaving home. We took bus to Santiago airport from Santiago for 3 euros then had 2 hour flight to Paris.

I would strongly recommend that you fly to madrid. I am assuming you will be doing the camino frances. If you have unlimited time, you can either take the bus or train or even fly to biarritz and go from there by train to sjpdp. On the way back, take either the direct morning or night train from santiago to madrid on your way home.

Good luck on your planning for the camino. God bless and buen camino.
