Getting from Santaigo to Villa Franca on a Sunday night

With all my research and planning my day to day stops and travel at the beginning and end of my camino, I just realized that I do not know how I am getting from Santiago to Villa Franca where I will be starting my trip. As I have read some posts, it now seems that I will have trouble getting there on a Sunday night. My flight into Santiago arrives at 7:10 PM on a Sunday night. I have a hotel booked in Villa Franca for that same night. I misjudged the travel time via bus/train. Do taxi's travel that distance. If so does anyone have an idea what the two hour taxi ride would cost? It seems I will arrive in Villa Franca around 10:00PM if I do a taxi... If I take a train/bus (not sure if they run that late), I will arive past 11, which may put me late for my check in. Thank you for any expertise/advise.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
From Santiago airport to Villafranca del Bierzo is more than 200km. A taxi fare would be very expensive. You might try to cancel the hotel reservation, stay in SdC overnight and bus or train to VdB the next day.

Alsa buses go direct from SdC bus station several times each day. See www.Alsa.es for more.

Good luck and Buen camino!

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Thank you. I will look into this.

The last Sunday bus from Santiago to Villafranca del Bierzo is 2130 from the bus station. It arrives at 0105 the next day. If your hotel knows in advance, they may open the door for you. ;)

Thank you for your reaearch. This is good to know. As I have pondered my problem for the last few hours, I am wondering after 20 hours of traveling via planes it may be better to to stay the night in santiago and take a morning bus to villa Franca, rather than hopping on yet another 3 hour bus ride that night.

Thank you to all. I've now changed my hotel plans so that I will stay the night near the airport and take a bus to Villafranca the next morning... I had no idea the bus ride would be 3.5 hours. Another question.... I plan to then go from Villafranca to Sarria where I will begin my camino journey. It looks like the only options for getting from Villafranca to Sarria are to rent a car or to take a taxi. I was hoping there would be a bus?? Does anyone know. I have looked and do not see a bus option.

ALSA bus from Villafranca del Bierzo to Lugo. Monbus from Lugo to Sarria. Several buses daily.

It is also possible to take ALSA bus from Villafranca to Piedrafita do Cebreiro and Monbus from Pedrafita do Cebreiro (note spelling change) to Sarria. The latter runs only once a day (not Sunday) and leaves early. (and I can't get the website to admit there is a bus after friday this week)

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.
