Hi lovely people
I am doing the fisterra from santiago with a small group of people, some first time pilgrims. Is there a place in santiago where people donate their walking poles that my friend can buy to use, then donate back?

We will arrive on Sunday morning to start walking on Monday

Thanks

LouiseEdin,
Try Pilgrim House, rua Nova, 19, a couple of blocks "behind" the Cathedral.
This is managed by natefaith a member of and a moderator for this forum. They are closed for winter until the beginning of March.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Just FYI & FWIW -

When I am working as a volunteer, I usually take the best quality poles abandoned at the Pilgrim Office to the Pilgrim House. The lower quality poles are sent with the trash - to recycling. I do this once or twice weekly. It depends on the availability of abandoned gear.

Pre-Covid, and I think it is being established now, Pilgrim House had the best "donativo" pile in town. It is not at all strange for a tourigrino to donate ALL their gear here before leaving, to return home, in tourist clothing. I have seen it several times when I am visiting there.

Takeaway - if you are in Santiago looking for gear - check out Pilgrim House. Don't forget to donate something in the cookie jar.

You would be surprised at the stuff people abandon, or just forget. In general, valuables and irreplaceable things like ID cards and national passports. credit cards, money wallets, etc. are held for the end of business each day. The following day, they are brought to the municipal police - just down the street. However, things like hiking gear and poles in particular are held for a short time, then processed as abandoned - see above.

Credencials are held for a longer time, as people frequently contact the office weeks or months later. looking for their credencial. They are loosely fled by month, then name, in a big box. As necessary, a volunteer or staffer will sift through the box if a request comes in.

Bottom line - DON'T LOSE YOUR STUFF!

I hope this helps.

Tom

I've just seen that the pilgrims house, where I was going to get poles tomorrow is closed on Sundays. Has anyone got any suggestions? We are staying at the monesterio on Sunday night. Planned walking earlyish Monday morning
