Getting to Burgos 2013

I am hoping to continue my pilgrimage from Burgos sometime during 2013. I'm happy flying to Burgos (though I think it means 2 flights), and I'm happy once I get to the Cathedral, it's getting from the airport to the Cathedral that bothers me. Is anyone else planning to do that this year who wouldn't mind company while travelling?

Well, you learn something every day. I've been in Burgos probably a dozen times and I never even knew they had an airport!

the all-knowing Wikipedia says the following about the airport bus:
"The route begins in Plaza de España and stops in the following streets: Belorado, Segovia, Avenida de Castilla y León, San Roque, Glorieta de Logroño, San Bruno, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Real y Antigua, Vitoria 252, Alcalde Martín Cobos and from here to the airport terminal. ... The route schedules depend on the time of the flight; the bus will depart from Plaza España to the airport an hour and half before a flight and from the airport to the center half hour after the arrival of a flight." (This is confirmed by the Burgos city website, so it seems like you will have a bus that will be timed to coincide with your flight).

If the Plaza de Espana is actually the Plaza Mayor (as google maps tells me it is), it's just a short walk from there to the Cathedral.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem but can't you just get a taxi or bus from the airport?

I suspect the main problem will be getting a convenient flight to Burgos as there are so few. From most places you'd probably connect in Barcelona, but it might be significantly cheaper and not much slower to fly to Madrid and get a bus or train.

You walk right past it on the Camino, but there's so little activity there it's easy to miss! Buen Camino!

Oh but of course, now I remember it. Maybe I am usually too busy enjoying the garbage dump to pay attention to the airport.

And yes, a taxi would be easiest, but as a public transportation fanatic, I always try to find out about those options. Thanks for clarifying that tyrrek.

Hi Sue,

I looked into flying into Burgos myself when I continue my own camino in May, but the booking and connections seemed "cumbersome."

I am flying into Madrid and I found that the Alsa buses are very frequent from Madrid to Burgos, some even departing from the Madrid Airport, and others departing from Avda de America, which is a short subway journey from the airport.

Just one quick p.s. to Sheesh's comments. If you're going to go to the Avda. de Americas bus station, I'd recommend the municipal bus that goes directly from the airport. It's much less of a hassle than the metro, in my opinion.

If you land in T4 (Iberia and partners), it's the bus 204. If you land in T1, T2, or T3, it's bus 200.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I'm still hoping to join a group to walk onwards from Burgos, if possible. I'm very happy about the flying part and the actual Camino itself, it's negotiating buses and trains in a language I don't speak that's the problem. Taxis, albeit expensive, may be the answer!

Hi again!

If you fly into Madrid you can get a direct bus from the airport to Burgos. The bus station in Burgos is only 10 minutes walk from the cathedral, albergue etc where you could catch up with the group. The journey takes about 2hrs 30mins, and you probably won't be the only one at the airport with limited Spanish! Ask at the information desk where they will speak English, and try to get the bus. Use the money you save to buy everyone a menu peregrino when you get to Burgos!

Hi Sue,

I'm headed to Madrid with my husband on the 23rd of March and hiring a car so that we can spend the first night in Santo Domingo de Silas and hopefully hear a bit of Gregorian chant . We plan to go to Burgos the next day to drop off the car and get a bus to Santo Domingo to continue our Camino.
