Time of past OR future Camino
2023. Finish the VDLP. Zamora to Santiago.
Hi
Have checked past threads and haven’t seen this topic.
I will resume the VDLP in late April and am having great difficulty trying to sort through the travel logistics. Tried Loco2 and Romeo both of which indicate long and expensive travel options.
I am currently in Bournemouth, UK so looking for advice please.
With thanks

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Lots of trains from Madrid. Booked well in advance fares from about 20 euros and travel time from about 90 minutes. You can book through renfe.com. For flights I prefer to use kayak.co.uk as my search engine - lots of options. From Bournemouth you can fly to Madrid via Palma de Mallorca with Ryanair very cheaply. bournemouth.jpg

my logistics for the beginning of May (Salamanca - Astorga): plane for Bilbao, bus for Burgos (evening and sleeping in wonderful Burgos), next day bus Burgos - Salamanca, 11 €, already bought :D!
if you have enough time - Salamanca earn two days ;)

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc

Thank you. I hadn’t thought of that route and if the connections work I can be in Salamanca on the same day. I spent a few days there last year after walking from Seville and know it is a beautiful city. Hopefully can get a bed in the albergue the same night.

Hi again
I looked at the Ryanair flights and the moment I put in a checked bag it just about trebles the price. Was thinking of a checked bag to put my walking poles in as they won’t allow as carry on. Need checked for both legs.
I know some people leave them behind and buy on arrival and leave them again at the end. Looks like an option.

Yep, Madrid works fine. About 3 hours by train from Madrid to Salamanca. Also, I know it's been said in other posts but take a look at Rome2Rio website. They are very good at showing all the alternatives to get from one place to another. They merge both plane flights, long haul buses and local buses so that you have a good idea what the total cost would be (both in time and money).

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

That is a pain! They count each leg as a separate booking and add a bag fee to each :( I would probably just buy poles in Spain. A few Decathlon shops in Madrid and probably one or two in Salamanca.

Happymarkos........I had to do this last year, so flew Stansted to Santiago and then the Alsa bus to Salamanca from Santiago bus station . I think it was about a 6 or 7 hr journey from Santiago which arrives in Salamanca about 2300Hrs .

Regards ....John

I am also looking at flying to Madrid and then train or bus to Salamanca. Bournemouth is about 5 hours from Stansted so it can make it a very long day.

Hi Happymark
Last September I flew Ryanair Dublin to Madrid. 45 mins after landing I got bus from the airport to Salamanca. Duration about 2 hrs 15mins. Buy the ticket from the bus driver. Alternatively you can buy the bus ticket at the travel agency booth in the airport for about 8 euro extra. Bus ticket c. 20 euro. Plenty of seats available on the bus. Albergue near Cathedral and the fabulous Roman bridge on the VDLP entering Salamanca. Beautiful city. Buen Camino

I am flying LHR to MAD and then going by bus to Salamanca in September. As for walking sticks, perhaps it would be economical to post them to a post office in Salamanca - Poste Restante / Lista Correos. This one appears to be the closest to the Albergue:

GRAN VIA, 25-29
37001 SALAMANCA (Salamanca)
Tel:923281457
Fax: 923270092

For ALSA buses, I've used the app in the past. I see that the buses from Madrid are operated by Avanza, which also has an app ... I will probably download that and buy a ticket when I arrive.

WOW, what fantastic help. Thank you Raggy. Really appreciated. Had not thought of posting my walking poles.
