Good cheap hotel in Madrid in the old quarter

I've only allowed one night in Madrid after 31 hours in total flying!! We want something central so we can have a look around and some tapas and a sleep! Considering we will be in refugios for the next month, luxury is not necessary but a private room for peace and quiet would be lovely.
We will be off to Roncesvalles the next day.

Yikes - depends on what you call cheap! Around the Puerta del Sol right in the centre there are a number of hostals - decent and clean with small private showers. You may wish to splash out a wee bit and if so try http://www.hoteleuropa.es/ If not then just a few yards away is the Hostal Triana http://hostaltriana.com This is an old staging post of mine although I haven't stayed there for a very long time.

The Puerta del Sol is very central and has its own metro station so you can get to it from the airport. Both hotels are just a few mins walk from there.

Madrid and sleep

I have stayed in Hostal Cruz Sol, it's very nice.
I've also stayed at other places near Puerto del Sol and Gran Via. Here's two:
Hostal las Fuentes, similar to Cruz Sol.

Another one, where I've stayed several times is Hostal Nuria. A bit simpler and rooms are worn, but clean and very good for the price. The breakfast at Nuria is a bit boring, you're better off to go to a café nearby. Or a churreria!

However, if your primary goal is a good sleep, ask for a "habitacion interior" (with window to the yard, as the nightlife in the city centre can be pretty loud.:roll: This goes for all hotels and pensions in the city!

This time around I booked another one, at a cheaper level, Hostal Miralva. (25 € for a single room, shared bathroom) I'll report back when I've stayed there. :mrgreen:

Hm, about hostal miralva. I should've reported back earlier.
Not much wrong with the hostal, when you consider the price. But I got a room next to the reception, and I overheard every word the receptionist said to every new guest. I can fill in and tell the little tale about the keys and the showers any time!
Once I had fallen asleep I woke up when people started to come home from their night adventures. So if you want a good nights sleep, as a perergino may need, you should ask for another room if you get the one next to the reception.
However, it was clean enough, showers were OK, and the old bloke in the reception was friendly, and very impressed by the fact that I was going on the Camino! I'd stay there again,if I'm in Madrid for a shopping/party weekend, or if the next day will be spent on bus/train, but maybe chose another hostal the night before the first walk.

I stayed a few nights in Hostal Fuentes again in december, very nice albeit small single rooms, newly refurbished.

One more vote for the Hostal Cuz Sol (see website in previous post). We stayed there in December 2007 for 3 nights. It has a great central location. The room we had was small but spotlessly clean. And CHEAP! I would definitely stay there again myself and recommend it to anyone looking for inexpensive, clean accommodation.

And I'll throw in my 2 pesetas! I like the Hostal Persal... it is just off the Plaza Santa Ana inthe Barrio Santa Ana - which is right where all the tapas bars are! Fine cafes, restaurants and a good breakfast included ... I had a single room with a bathroom for €30 (breakfast included). They have a website... also very near Sol and in between the Prado and Sol... good location. You have a few good choices now, I think.

Thanks, Sil for updating that. It was spring 2006 when I stayed there. I guess now that they have the newly refurbished and beautiful Melia Reina Victoria across the street, they feel they've moved into a classier neighborhood! I still had a great stay there!
