13th April 2013 leaving. SJPDP via Rome
Hi all,
I am leaving SJPDP on the 13th April. I am staying at Orisson on the 13th night. Incase the weather turns bad, does anyone have a gpx trak for an alternative to Roncevalles via a lower road. I hear there is a short cut just past Orisson. I could use google earth but this may not be a true indication of best path.
Thanks

Hi Maxx44,

I have the Valcarlos route track map and am happy to share that. I don't have one that connects the Route Napolean to Valcarlos route (if that is what you mean) from Orisson.

There appear to be many paths throughout the Pyrenees between Orisson, Valcarlos (etc) and Roncesvalles, as no doubt you have discovered yourself in Google earth. I have not walked them and cannot comment on them as to their suitability. I'm not sure if any of them are a short cut. If you were determined to use one path you could create a path in Google earth and add it as a track to your GPS and use that as a guide on the day. (eg using a Garmin GPS and the Garmin Base Camp software). I am happy to walk you through this process if relevant. However I'm not sure if walking off the beaten path in poor weather conditions is the best idea.

But more generally you raise a good point: what to do when setting off from Orisson and it is not recommended that you continue over the Pyrenees that day. I guess you could:
a. get a taxi back to St Jean and re-evaluate your options (if you have time),
b. get a taxi to Valcarlos and continue to walk to Roncesvalles that way (assuming that the Valcarlos route is safe, which it may not be), and
c. taxi/bus via St Jean to Roncesvalles and accept the unfortunate weather circumstances.

If you have the valcaros rout, that would be great. At least i could join up with that one. If the weather is rainy but not dangerous, at least i will know i am heading in the right direction and not worrying about missing the signs. Bad weather is one thing, getting lost is another. I llve trekking by gps. Small and light bjt worth there weight in gold when you know your heading the right way
