Could anyone tell me if the distances on the gronze site are reliable (or reliably under- or over-estimated)? Thanks

Looking at the kilometers from the home page they look fairly close. Your mileage may vary depending on alternates and side trips you may undertake.

I have done a comparison of 4 different guides, including the Gonze site, for Sarria to Santiago. The distances all vary. See attached.

Ditto what Freetime said. It depends on which path you actually walk. Eg you could easily walk 200-300m extra in and out of Portomarin depending on which path you take. You could add 400-500m or so depending on whether you take the road from Pedrouzo to Amenal or go through the forest. etc

On the Norte and Primitivo we found the gronze site to be the most accurate of the on-line sites, for distances and elevations, with some good advice too. Also for the end of the Francés when we joined it at Palas de Rei.

The mojones at the end of the Francés in Coruna province are 5kms short because they do not take into account the extra distance round the lengthened Lavacolla runway. After the airport area they are then correct again

I am leading a group of people who are not-so-able in May. We want to walk the last 100km to Santiago in 17 days, covering 5km to 8km per day . I

In some books (and on Godesalco) Sarria is 114km from Santiago.
In the Confraternity of St James guide Sarria is 120km from Santiago.
I contacted Johnnie in the pilgrim office in Santiago to ask where the official 100km mark from Santiago is and he said they accept from Barbadelo.

Godesalco says it is 110km from Barbadelo.
The CSJ guide says that Barbadelo is 115km from Santiago.
The Brierley guide says 112km.

We don't want to walk an extra 10km, 12km or 15km (that would be another two or three days) so I emailed a guy who has lived in Santiago for years and does guided and unguided tours and he said Peruscallo is exactly 100km from Santiago.

Someone should offer to walk on the exact path (no detours) with one of those wheeled road measurement instruments and get an accurate measurement.

The Peter Robins maps are accurate to two decimal places, and show the distance from Sarria to Santiago as 113.81 km. The distance from Sarria to Portomarin is 22.92 km, so the 100.00 km spot is in that stretch! If someone can either measure the trace on the Robins map, or download the kml dump data to an appropriate program, the EXACT spot could be determined to the 7.8 meter accuracy of GPS. Many of the distance markers on the Camino Portugues have a distance-to-cathedral number on them. Maybe the Camino Frances could do the same?

I am too technically retarded to understand all this but if someone can do that, I'll know exactly where my not-so-able pilgrims should start walking the Camino

Hola Sil,
You can work a running total out on gronze. By working backwards from Santiago I make it 102.8kms from Ferreiros.

From the elevation you also start off pretty well downhill too.

When walking we have found the gronze site accurate. Terry has a small pedometer, properly calibrated, which he has used on all his Caminos.

They could be as wrong as anyone else, but they self-declare a distance of 98 km.

I vaguely recall a distance posting at the restaurant there saying it was a bit over 100 km.

We really need a GPS expert to find a way to get an accurate distance on the trace!

A Google Maps walking route from the road intersection in Ferreiros to the Cathedral says it is 99.4 km, and 20:45 hours of walking. However, it selected a circuitous road route after Ferreiros to about Mercadoiro, so the stated distance is overstated. It similarly overstates the distance after Palas de Rei to Melide. Since I think the Peter Robins map is a GPS walking trace, an analysis of it could pinpoint the 100 km mark (assuming the 100 km waypost is not correct...).

I am arriving in Spain 10 days before the group gets there so that I can walk the route.

There are a few recommended detours in the ibermutuamur guide - some onto small roads - for people who are not-so-able and I want to try these out and measure the distances. I do have a pedometer and hope that it will put my mind at rest that I'm not under estimating the distances these people have to walk.

If we can start at Ferreiros instead of Barbadelo and save between 8km and 9km that will be good!

Is there any chance you can borrow a GPS? It would be much more accurate than a pedometer, which might be prone to error from short steps up and down hill.

I am due for a cell phone upgrade next month and I think my next phone will have GPS capability. Will that do?

With the proper app, I would guess it would. It will need to trace your movement rather than just give you the lat./long. of your current location. My Garmin GPS did both.

Maybe we can recommend some easy to use apps. What type of phone are you planning on getting?
