Hi,

It's me again... So I wonder if there is any written guide for the Lana? In Spanish? And where I can obtain it? I know I can browse the web myself, but hey, if anyone knows already... Give me a hint... Or if it's possible to print it from the Internet. I think there's no guide for this route on Eroski?

Laurie, I read a while ago that you would walk the Lana earlier (now?), is that correct? What did you use?

I plan to start from Alicante mid-June. I haven't booked my flight yet but I think it'll be okay (fingers crossed).

Let me know if others will be around in Alicante those days!

This summer, I hope I can do the Lana, the Vasco, and finally the Invierno which I looong to walk for a second time. Or if I should substitute one of these for the Salvador....................

I hope to hear from you all or to see you from Alicante and onwards!

So which is the best guide for the Lana?

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Hi BP,
There seems to be some downloadable information about the Lana on the CSJ site (scroll down towards the bottom of the page as the first sections are about the Levante).

There's also some info, albeit not a guide, on Ray y Rosa. If you use GPS, Ray y Rosa seem have wikiloc tracks for most Caminos.

Wishing you a very Buen Camino - I'm envious of your plan!

Thanks K1,

I found nice stuff there. I like to carry a paper guide (book) but it seems that the last one is from 2001? Oh well. Preparations have begun...

Just make your own booklet from those on-line guides and you'll have it ;)

BP, I don't remember if you speak Spanish, but I think this site is helpful too.

Not this year for me, but I will get there! I first got the Lana bug about five years ago in Alex's albergue in Bodenaya on the Primitivo. He had walked it in the winter and says it's really a great one.

BTW, when you get to Covarrubias, you should consider adding on a few days to walk the San Olav "backwards" from Covarrubias to Burgos, like Reb and I did last year. It is a very wonderful camino. Alexwalker has made a guide and there are a bunch of forum posts.

I will be interested to hear if you think your starting date was too late -- are you fine walking in high heat?

Buen camino, Laurie

Hi Laurie,

I always start around June 20th, my work leaves me no choice. So I have to endure the heat... Starting in Sevilla/Valencia/Alicante this time of year is hard, of course...

Yes, I read abour your San Olav option last year! I will definitely look it up!

I have found sources in Spanish and English now so I think I will be alright. The one you pointed me to has maps - even better.

Stupid as I am, I haven't booked my flight yet. Last time I checked it didn't seem to become a problem. Will do that today. Maybe I'll get an unpleasant surprise...

So what are your plans for summer?? I haven't been here for a while so have you decided to go for another Camino?

Byyyye!

BP

Just checking back in to complain. Since I saw this post, I have been thinking and asking myself -- why am I walking the Norte this year? Wouldn't I be happier on the Lana? This is all your fault. It looks so wonderful, BP, I guess I am just constitutionally incapable of resisting these solitary caminos!

Oh, I read your post now so it seems you're going for the Norte. Any alternatives towards other caminos on the way? Will you repeat the Primitivo??

/BP

Well, we'll see. I do have lots of coastal alternatives loaded onto my GPS, which I will use if I head off on my own off-Camino. I think I will stay with the Norte, since I walked the Primitivo and Salvador last year as I came up from the Ebro. But the Lana is so so tempting!!! Looking forward to reading all about it. Looks like we won't cross paths in Santiago either, maybe next year!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Well I will try to add the Camino Vasco or Interior and also the Invierno, so who knows... I'll be in Santiago by the end of July (as always...)

Hope to see you there!

I've just recieved a message from Paco Serra Escolano, also author of the Sureste guide, that the guide de la Lana now is online. He offers me instructions on how to download. So I guess this is the end of written & printed guides now...

The problem is that the instructions might as well have been written in ancient greek. I understand absolutely nothing. I'm currently downloading something that will take approximately 4 hours? Oh yeah this is really an improvement.

More info! Where is this Lana guide?! Despite my best efforts with google, I cannot find it.

Every time you mention the Ruta de la Lana, BP, I find myself re-evaluating my decision to walk the Norte. Should I head to Alicante on May 22 or 23 after the Baztan? Will it be too hot?

The Lana from Alicante to Burgos is about 600 km. Mundicamino shows reasonable stages for a total of 23 days. I am a few days short because I'm meeting someone in Gijon on June 12, so I guess realistically, the Lana will have to wait.

Good for those who know how to use it. I have no idea.

We'll have to get one of our tech experts to tell us how to use it. I can download the one page easily, but then all I see is a page filled with those little squares filled with all sorts of weird black shapes that smart people know how to open by clicking their phone on it.

It's QR coded and you need to download Neoreader app to your smart phone to get the file. Don't ask me how though :D That's all I understand reading the instructions, hahaha.

And I really can't imagine authors reasons for setting such complicated procedure :confused:

Oh, I thought I was the only one not grasping how to use this, hence the irritation.

Actually I started to search how to download and yes, it was complicated, according to me, but once you have the programs/apps or whatever I hope it will be easy to use.

You have to download Dropbox and Neoreader that are both free. Then you read those ugly squares with your phone. Open them on your phone or send them to your PC and you can open them on your computer as well.

What I don't still understand is how people are supposed to read those pages on their phones, if they have small phones like me: the text is too small and if you zoom in on it, you can't see it all on one page and it becomes complicated reading it. So just looking at a paper would be 1438 % better.

Then of course you can print it from your PC and make your own booklet, like Kinky1 suggested above. But then I have to print the files one by one (?). There are about 20 stages and four or five separate files attached to them (1 map, 2 instructions, 3 GPS, 4 albergues, or something like that). Will it take me two days to print it??? I am not happy with this...

I don't understand it either.... They don't make any money of it... Okay, so the Camino industry should be non-profit and supposed to help people I guess, but financially it doesn't make sense... They can update it whenever they want so that's good BUT I can't figure it out how to read this properly on a small phone... Or if my phone stops functioning in the middle of nowhere...

I hope to do it in 20 stages, so I have some extra time to hop onto the Invierno... It will certainly be hot! I hope I can throw in the Baztán as well! I actually don't know exactly where to go after Burgos... I will decide when I get there...

I'm not sure, I'm not used to this. They are downloaded as pdf:s but they come one by one. I will take som time next week to figure it out...

I am virtually certain that there is someone on the forum who can do this in a snap. And then, since it is available for free on the internet, I assume there is no problem in posting it for all the luddites among us, like me. I am going to start a new thread. I think people pity me and my terrible tech skills so maybe someone will come to the rescue. :p

Okay,

Good news: there is ONE file with maps, directions and albergues for each stage so one only needs to print 20 pages.

The problem is that I can't figure out how to export the files from the Dropbox on the cellphone, to the Dropbox on the computer. It's my account either way so I don't know why it doesn't appear in my computer.

Here are the URLs for each of the folders on that PDF. Please let me know if I missed any. Note that two of the folders seem to be empty. These are all Dropbox links. You can download the files to your own Dropbox account if you have one. If you don't, you can simply download them directly (without having to sign up for an account).

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Oh my goodness, a million likes! I won't be able to check this out till I get to my computer tomorrow, but I am very grateful. BP, what do you think about the two "empty files?" Maybe a note to the author? Do you know which files are empty?

Oh, I have to leave my computer now so I will look it up tomorrow. I am so happy about this. Finally maps with details that can guide you even in the cities. If only I could go now. I saved some of them on my PC so I can read them later, for entertainment, ha ha.

Byyyyye

I also have to say I am very confused by the titles to some of these files. Many of those towns (Gallur Borja Pozalmuro Soria, etc) are on the Castellano Aragonés (which I walked and loved last year) and not the Lana. So this must be information on more than one camino? True, the Castellano Aragonés does connect with the Lana in Santo Domingo, but it is a totally separate route. I'm just going to wait for you to sort it all out BP!

@peregrina2000 Happy to help -- you've personally helped me many hundreds of times; you just didn't know it. :)

QR codes are nice but they really shouldn't be used on their own (there should always be URLs too). The odd thing in this particular case is that you can't use your phone to scan the code if the PDF is on your phone... :) Still, the content looks quite nice from what I've looked at so far. It deserves to be more easily accessible!

The two empty folders I noticed were Villalonga and Loriguilla. There may be others (I haven't checked all of the folders yet).

My plan is to check out the stages, print them, and put them in the right order so there will be a guide. I have a lot of work-related stuff to do at the moment so I don't know when. But I will come back as soon as it's done.

And then you can make us a gift - scan everything when in order, make one file out of many and post the complete guide here :D;)

I've gotten so far that I have downloaded all the stages for the Lana. Luckily, there are no empty files as was suggested above? Maybe they are on the Camino de la Requena, which I haven't downloaded.

There are also files with gps and "kmz" (???) but how to save/open them is beyond me. I hope it is enough with the regular guide that contains: maps (good), rutómetro (directions) and the list of bars, stores, albergues-pensiones-places to stay for each stage.

There are lots of free apps for .kml, .gpx etc. files to download on the internet. But I'm sure there are GPS tracks available on WikiLoc for example. Depends how you want to use the GPS tracks, get to them directly or save them in your phone.

You don't really have to do that, BP :) Unless you need them for yourself because you can not put GPS tracks in the guide. You just use them on your phone and anybody can do that when decided to go for La Lana. I think Camigos did very good job with those maps that are already in the guide. One just have to know how to read them though ;)

Yeees I am thrilled about the maps, yum yum. That's one part of the fun. I'm currently putting them in the right order. But... Can I upload it all as one PDF here (or in the ressources section)? Aren't there a limit for how much you can upload at a time here?

Huh, I don't know about limitations of data in threads. But you can post it in Resources section and post a link to it here in this thread. Either way .pdf files aren't really big.

I think I tried that, when I did my poorly edited Sureste Journal. It wouldn't accept more than 3-4 pages at a time. That's why I had to publish my stages separately. Oh well, we'll see! :O)

Hi BP - I've been away for the past few days and am just catching up on this thread. "KMZ" files are a compressed form of KMLs. Both are Google's formats, used in Google Earth. You can open either directly in Google Earth or you can use a free utility such as GPSBabel (https://www.gpsbabel.org/) to convert between various formats.

Google Earth is an app that lets you explore places via satellite imagery. If you've never used it, I highly recommend you give it a try -- amazing app for anyone looking at trails. It's free. Search for it on Google. There are versions for PC and Mac. Once you've installed it, double-click on a KML or KMZ file and it will open in Google Earth. Those files contain geo-located information, such as the location of places on the trail and the trail itself. Sometimes KMZ files can contain photos as well.

A really fun feature of Google Earth is that you can use it to "fly" along the route, giving a great overview.

Okay, I'll give it a try!

I'm currently printing the Lana guide... slowly, at work, one day at a time... The bosses say we print far too much and in colour, which is expensive... Trying not to get caught... The risks I have to take............ :O) So yes, just having everything in your phone would be much easier of course... XOD

Okay so I tried to purchase the credencial from Ivar's store... I put 1 credencial in the cart... And where do I go to pay??

I guess just follow the steps for payment. I don't really remember what the procedure was when I bought Camino forum patches but even for such a IT noob as I am it was easy :)

Hi ho,

I bought the credencial from Ivar's store and hopefully it will arrive soon!

Difficult to book a hostel in Alicante, perhaps because of San Juan (it's the 23 and I arrive the 22). But I got hold of one.

The guide to the Lana is soon to be published here!

Yesterday I got my Credencial from Ivar by mail - that was FAST considering I made the order on Thursday, with a weekend in between! Thanks! :OD

Well, all my followers.............. I can't scan it. It's like 173 pages (!!!) and I can't send it to my computer. :O(

Can you divide it into sections and then scan each section? Or can you copy a series of "pages" into your browser to make a scanable section?

Mspath: I don't know where the limit is but I could try to divide it yes....

Yes K1: Maps & texts are really big and I'm sure there is a way to shrink it so there would be fewer pages... but I don't know how to do any of this... 173 pages are also very heavy so it's the equivalent of a large book... Who would want to carry it... But in pdf in a tablet or on a phone it's easy of course...

I will try something...
