German public TV will adapt best-seller on the road to Santiago.

The first German public television network (ARD) has decided to adapt to the small screen the book on the path of Santiago 'Ich bin dann bad weg' ( 'I am leaving') by the German comedian Hape Kerkeling, which has been a best seller in Germany for two years.
According to the weekly advances today 'Der Spiegel, which goes on sale on Monday, the chain expects to be able to broadcast the program by the end of next year.
The adaptation will be co-produced by the channel Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NRD), whose leader, Volker Herren, will act as program director of ARD from November 1.
According to Herren, who has long expressed his desire to work with Kerkeling they are currently negotiating with him.
'Ich bin dann weg evil' relented in June, the first on the list of best-selling books in Germany after one hundred weeks of lead in the category of 'bestsellers' non-fiction of' Der Spiegel '.
Kerkeling's book appeared on May 22, 2006, with a first edition of 50,000 copies, and was the first time since a bestseller, to the point that it sold 20,000 copies a day.
Until June this year, according to the editorial Malik, Kerkeling sold over three million copies making 'Ich bin dann weg evil' one of the most successful non-fiction books in Germany since 1945.
The television comedian known primarily for his imitations of famous people, traveled the road to Santiago to get out of a personal crisis and described his experience in the key humorous book, which captivated the public but did not have any claim to literary criticism.
Kerkeling claims to have taken seriously the pilgrimage but he could not avoid making permanent caricatures of the other pilgrims, and generally the people in their journey to Santiago de Compostela.

Dear Sil,

I was first interested in the Camino after reading Shirley Maclaine's book. I then found this forum and your invaluable practical comments about the journey gave us, a 67 year old man and his wife, to do the Walk. We are practicing Catholics but never intended to do the walk as done by what we call "purists". We had a wonderful time and met so many gracious people. We were taken aback by some of the things written by those who turned their noses at people who read Hape Kerkeling's book.

See sagalout's comments:

[to call a book that is the german best seller, a frivolous best seller written by a comedian without first reading it , is so stereotypical!!!.
from all accounts this book is whimsical and ultimately very moving as mr kerkeling meets his god on the way. written by a man that speaks german, spanish, italian, french, english and dutch fluently, a film maker,a top ten singer ( all life is a quiz).
also as a director of "aktion courage" a group that fights againts xenophobia (mr kerkeling is gay) it starts to look like he is the most unstereotypical german ever, and i for one can't wait for the english edition of his book,so i can make my own mind up and not jump to conclusions.

I will be the first to try to get the book when it is in English, please keep us updated when this will come to fruition.
