Have you seen the beautiful Midpoint Marker placed right before Sahagun?

This past October (2013) while walking the Camino (Frances) my jaw dropped when I saw the beautiful Midpoint Marker placed at the Ermita del Puente site, right after the medieval bridge over the Valderaduey River. The sculptures were recently unveiled and they are absolutely gorgeous.

Two huge statues flanking the Camino, one of Alphonse VI the Brave (1065-1109)- Promoter and Protector of the Way of St. James and on the other side Bernardo de Seriedad (Spanish name; Aeseriac: French)), an Abad considered one of the founders of Sahagun. I was so excited to see this!Camino Frances- Midpoint Marker.jpg

I hope they haven't taken the bins away. That's where the last of Palencia's trash gets dumped each year. First dumpsters in Provincia de Leon! :)

Notice the "sun dial" effect made by the Bernardo Aeseriac statue (right (south end) on the picture). It was close to 2pm when I took the picture. Cool.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Another landmark , was there in early October, too much rain to stop but would somebody improve the entrance to Sahagun .

Do you mean these?

Lovely but certainly a mis-nomer. Walking from Le Puy last year and meeting pilgrims who had set out from from Switzerland, from Belgium, from Vienna, from Paderborn and I will walk again this year myself this time from from Vezelay, Shagun is the home stretch, no where close to midway!

I'm getting a weird Neverending Story vibe from these...

But is it the Sphinx Gate or the Southern Oracle?

The Camino is a bit like the Never Ending Story if you think about it. We've all had days when we've thought "But that's so far..." And we've all got people back home wishing us luck on our quest.

Just a shame we don't have a luck dragon to carry us.

It is NO misnomer, it IS the Midpoint of the Camino in Spain: Roncesvalles to Santiago. I don't believe for a second that it would not had ocurred to somebody to define start-endpoint if defining a midpoint ;)....

Olivares Friend do lighten up-the Camino Frances is not THE Camino, it is part of a much greater and more inspiring whole-lovely marker but there is an entire universe there waiting to be explored:
whichroute2012.gif

and this little map does not include Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, or Austria, countries from which so many Pilgrims set out. not meaning to disparage, this monument only marks the last furlong for many of us.

Scruffy, on this one I REALLY think YOU need to lighten up. Seriously. Once again, as the monument clearly states, it is the midpoint Camino Frances in Spain, Roncesvalles-Santiago...really, what is so difficult to grasp about that? OF COURSE, there are hundreds and hundreds of routes leading to Santiago de Compostela-- I certainly think the people in Sahagun know this MUCH beter than any of us, relative recent newcomers to the Camino de Santiago. Please, let's not make of this what it was never intended to be, instead of what it IS.

And here I thought the only factual problem with the monument was crediting these two men with founding the town of Sahagun! (which is preposterous...)

...and Rebekah, who since many years has lived only a short hop from Sahagún (Moratinos), with her inquisitive mind she is probably a better informed person!?;)

I saw many 'half-way' markers in the Sahagun area. I think the first one I noticed was in a bar in San Nicolas del Real Camino, and there were then more! They are all half way from somewhere to Santiago.
