HELP! Amsterdam to St. Jean Pied de Port

MJL

New Member
Hello,
I am trying desperately to find GPS coordinates from Amsterdam to St. Jean Pied de Port. I am no orienteer and am not going to pretend to be a skilled map reader. What I am doing is trying to raise money to help people suffering from cancer by raising funds through long distance walking. There seems to be zero coherent information out there about walking from Amsterdam to the Camino Frances. Can anyone help with GPS possibilities?

Thank you in advance...

Marco

Hi Marco, and welcome to the forum. I walked from Breda to Santiago, and relied on the guides from the Dutch Society of St. Jacob (Nederlands Genootschap Sint Jacob).

But they also offer help with those of us who are more directionally challenged. Check this link for further info (in Dutch).

If you need more help, let me know. Happy planning!

Personally, and yes I have done long distance pilgrimages ;-), I just forget about GPS and work like this:

Where do I live?
Where is the closest Camino (yes, they do exist all over Europe and are way marked outside Spain/Portugal).
How do I get to that 'entry point' on the Camino network from where I am via local hiking paths.

Useful, albeight in German, http://www.jakobswege-europa.de/wege/

Believe it or not - planning a long distance pilgrimage is quite easy and no rocket science ;-) Buen Camino, SY

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Half the fun is in the planning, then actually walking it and finally the achievement when you reach the destination.

It seems this won't be an option unfortunately as there is no real coherent information available on the route. Anything that exists is only in Dutch and only dumps you out at the edge of the Ardennes with no further route.

I got on the train and went in person to the Nederlands Genootschap Sint Jacob (because the woman answering the phone said no-one would help me by phone) and when I was there they basically said, Wow, great idea. We have no way to help you plan the route and no advice but buen camino. They did however tell me that the routes from Amsterdam toward spain are unmarked.

As I only have about a year to live, taking my time to plan a walk that should already have a pretty clearly existing route but does not isn't really of any interest.

Unless there are solid GPS coordinates this is not an option unfortunately.

I get your meaning but some of us simply don't have that much time left.

Buen Camino and I hope you manage to achieve your dream.

Another idea, try contacting @simonea here on the forum, she is from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and has walked from the Netherlands to Santiago with a friend. Buen Camino, will write again if I digg more info out. SY

Ok, seems the closest "entry point" to Amsterdam into the wider Camino network is Nimwegen, here is what I found (sorry, the pages are all in German, but there are some GPS tracks available:

Nimwegen > Lüttich http://www.jakobswege-europa.de/wege/nordrhein.htm Download link for GPS tracks under the map.

Lüttich > Metz > Vezelay http://www.jakobswege-europa.de/wege/luettich-metz-burgund.htm
Download link for GPS tracks under the map.

Alternatively you can go from Metz to Le Puy.

From Vezelay/Le Puy on the way marking and pilgrim infrastructure should be good enough to make it easy to find the way to SJPdP.

Does that help? Buen Camino, SY

It might be the abundance of choice that strikes you as incoherent or chaotic. I'll break down my own itinerary, so you can decide if that will work for you:

Amsterdam, Utrecht, Breda (GPX-links here)
Via Brabantica, Breda to Geldenaken (Jodoigne) (GPX-links here)
Via Monastica, Geldenaken to Rocroi (GPX-links here)
Via Campaniensis, Rocroi to Vezelay (GPX-links here)
Via Lemovicensis, Vezelay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (GPX-links here)
Camino Frances (GPX-links here)

Routes from Breda toward Spain are certainly not unmarked, but you do need to pay close attention on some stretches. Every region you pass is waymarked by a different group of volunteers, and some do a better job than others.

A few years ago...well a lot really, when I lived in Eindhoven I was signs for the Camino in Achelse Kluis, which is just inside Belgium near to Eindhoven. So I have done some digging. Here are three routes which start in The Netherlands and found this.
https://www.santiago.nl/wadcamino-wandelroutes
This is a route though France.
https://www.santiago.nl/english/vezelay-main-page
Also The Belgium TV maker VRT done a series of programmes about walking the route.
Here is just one part..

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Excellent information @Purky!
This is all the information you should need Marco. I have done the first part of the Pelgrimsweg from Amsterdam and the signage is good. I did carry a guide but only used it to see if there were any cafes along the route.
I find it quite bizarre that the Dutch Genootschap couldn't help you.
There is also a Dutch Camino Facebook closed groep (Camino de Santiago - ngsj) where you can ask specific questions. Most are very helpful and there are many participants who have walked from The Netherlands.

Outstanding! Many, many thanks to you for those...

Hi @MJL it looks as though @Purky has done the job.

And s/he links in the Vezelay route. This link might be useful:
https://www.csj.org.uk/planning-you...-santiago/the-routes-today/the-vezelay-route/

I have seen parts of the countryside from Amsterdam through Belgium and into the start of the Vezelay route. I would liken that countryside as being, relative to mine (I live at nearly 100 metres above sea level and less than 2 km from sea level), billiard table flat. Accordingly, you may care to consider biking the first several hundred km.

A support team could help with the transition from biking to walking, in particular the changes of some of your clothing and equipment.

Hi Marco, it s not so difficult. All gps tracks are on the website of my association. https://www.santiago.nl/wegnaarbuiten-meer-informatie-lopen

Good luck. Simone

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hi all,

Sorry for the 'not so positive' experience you had in the office off the dutch confranity (NGSJ).
Two years ago I did walk from Amsterdam to SdC, all on GPS routes which I found at the site of NGSJ. Together with maps.me it worked out perfect for me, I didn't need any other map. In these files you get al the caminoroutes in the different country so you can switch camino very easy while you go, if you want.

At this moment the NGSJ is working on making the information available also in English, but it is not there yet....

I did put all these files in the resource part of this forum:
Netherlands:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...ll-dutch-netherlands-caminos-in-one-file.505/
Belgium:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...racks-of-all-belgium-caminos-in-one-file.504/
France:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...tracks-of-all-french-caminos-in-one-file.342/
Spain:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...racks-of-all-spanish-caminos-in-one-file.341/

If you want, there is also digital information available on accomodations on the way, this you can be dowloaded in the same way as the routes, you will see all accomodations plus info in your app. They can be downloaded only directly form the NGSJ site. There will be regular updates so check before you go.
Look at these pages at the section 'Downloads overnachtingsplaatsen' (downloads accomodation):
For Netherlands:
https://www.santiago.nl/wegnaarbuiten-nederland?goto=Nederland&minzoom=7
Belgium:
https://www.santiago.nl/wegnaarbuiten-belgie?goto=België&minzoom=7
France:
https://www.santiago.nl/wegnaarbuiten-frankrijk?goto=Frankrijk&minzoom=6
For Spain: there are many other apps with all info.

When all the English info is ready I hope to make a new topic on this forum with all info about these routes and accomodation files.
Buen camino!
