High speed train for Galicia

The first high-speed railway section in the region of Galicia will provide connections with the Atlantic Axis (only partially in service) linking the Atlantic cities of the region with the Portuguese border.
The new section is the end section of the Madrid-Galicia high-speed line which, starting in the current Madrid-Valladolid high-speed line, will link Madrid with the Northwest of Spain.

Once in service, travel time between Orense and Santiago de Compostela will be reduced by 70%, which will also significantly reduce connection time between Madrid and Galicia.

The Orense-Santiago de Compostela section, 87.5 km in length (38.5 km less than the current section), is part of the Madrid-Galicia high-speed line, included in the so-called North-Northwest high-speed corridor, that will connect the Northwest of the Iberian peninsula with its centre.

News is that the section between Ourense and Madrid is not very much on the back burner. The line in Galicia has flexible finishing dates. It now seems it has been put back to 2012.
Enclosed is a photo I took whilst flying out of SdC to Madrid. There is nothing like saying the train is a green way to travel, after seeing this devastation of the countryside. :oops:

Whenever it is put back too is is a disaster. If the infrastructure already installed is not used on a regular basis then it will prove to be unreliable. Portugal has seeming pulled out of the link between Galicia and Oporto. So that line is as good as dead now.
But still at lest the airport at Santiago is being expanded! :shock:
 
... all this added to the AVE construction that´s wreaking destruction all over the Camino de Madrid and Camino San Salvador, so wealthy travelers can get to Leon and Oviedo more quickly. Ah, progress!
