For Sale/Wanted Hiking poles

For those of us who are flying without checked baggage, it appears to be impossible to bring poles in our carry-ons. One might therefore think that there must be a lot of poles that get left behind in Europe. Is this the case and is there a stash anywhere? Are they all in SdC?

I put them in a plastic bag, taped them up and shipped them as my checked luggage.

I've just posted my Pacerpoles from the UK to my first night's accommodation in Spain at the cost of £12 (keep in mind Pacerpoles are bulkier and heavier than some poles, so it could be less). If I were to check them in for the flights to and from Dublin, and to and from Dublin to Santiago - I would not assume I get it for free, but would pay to check them in before I went - it would cost me a minimum of £20 pr leg, that's £80 or up to £100, which incidentally is the price of the poles. Returning them in the post to myself will cost about the same as here, £12. That's at least £56 saved, approximately €65, which will give me a good couple of days on the Camino. I will also enjoy a stress free travel day as I can take my camino pack into the cabin and keep it with me at all times. My poles are tracked so I will know when they have arrived, which should be in 3-5 days.

Great idea. Wish I had thought of doing that. Have paid to check our luggage purely because I wanted to bring my Pacer Poles. Ah well, good advice for anyone who has yet to book their flights.

Going from the US to Europe, I have never run into a problem including my trekking poles with my backpack as a carry-on; or for domestic flights within the US for that matter. However, I mail my poles back to my home when I fly out of Spain.

That's interesting. I checked with TSA last month during another domestic trip and they adamantly told me I would not be allowed to bring trekking poles on board. A couple weeks ago I asked a local friend who is a TSA supervisor and she said the same thing. She admitted there are of course individual agents who decide on things themselves, so it really depends on how much I value the item! I'm not checking any bags in August for my CF and am planning on just getting a pole there. It'll cost less than having to check mine, as my flight doesn't include any checked baggage.

There isn't any risk to having the poles confiscated, unless that is what you decide to do. You are given options to leave and check the poles in as luggage.

Unfortunately the high cost of checking them would be the issue for us since we don't get any free checked baggage with our flight. It would be great if TSA would get some consistency at some point but that's a whole other issue!

Out of curiosity, may I ask how much it costs to ship your poles home from Spain?

I ship the poles back with other things, like assorted souvenirs and specialty purchases and gifts, after reaching SdC, so I couldn't be sure what the cost for shipping just trekking poles might be.

Can you say what it costs to ship all your goodies including the poles? And where are you shipping to?

Unless you have a specified weight of the shipment, as well as the same zip code, it probably won't be a meaningful comparison. That said, I really do not remember cost or weight.
