Hip Replacements

Time of past OR future Camino
Levant from Avila 2013
I'm told that after 6 months "healing" my fractured hip will need to be replaced soon due to traumatic arthritis. Having walked part of the Camino de Levante (Avila to Santiago) in 2015, I can feel Spain calling. Already in the planning stage, having been put off by a number of medical interruptions. Have any of you nice people walked the Primitivio after a replacement? A possible added complication may be that by the time I've recovered and on my way from Sydney to Oviedo I will be in my 81st year. I'm a lifetime bushwalker and cyclist, or was until I came off my bike last September and fractured my pelvis quite badly.

My 76 year old dad completed the Primitivo with a hip replacement, shoulder replacement and nueropathy in his feet. He trained steadily over a long period of time and completed his pilgrimage in great shape. Of course, good food; lots of cerveza stops and cafe con leche helped too.

I am 52 and he stayed with me without much extra effort.

God speed on your adventure.

My husband completed the Caminho Portuguese with both hips being replaced. Whilst on the way he realized that the backpack was causing pain on the hips. Usually the weight of the backpack should be carried on the hips as much as possible but in his case it was a bad thing. Therefore we had to use the backpack transfer service (Tuitrans) which was a helpful and reliable service and all went well.

Have a great camino

I met a woman who did the Frances in 2014, all the way from SJPDP with 2 hip replacements. She was about 12 years older than I am, and she was 5 days faster over the 810 Kms.

I am currently healing an SI joint injury, planning my 2nd Camino this summer, but only 300 k this time. My friend from 2014 is my beacon of hope for my own ambitions.

I wish you every success.

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Met 65 year old Hester in 2001, double hip replacement, out walked all of us.

The only problem she had was blistering on her heels because the new hips had changed her gait but wouldn't give in to the point where the hospitalera at Sto Domingo stole her boots for a day to force a rest.

You might need to check your boots are still comfortable after the rebuild!

Sorry to hear about your injuries and hope you recover(ed) well. I'm a bit younger than you (30 years) but when I completed the Primitivo in 2017 there was a man who was 84 doing some stages.
I don't have a hip replacement yet, although I've got 12 screws in my right hip socket and with only 50% of upward movement in my right foot as well. I didn't have an issue with the Primitivo and also completed Hospitales (990m climb) as well in late Feb. I'm planning to do the Primitivo again in the holy year of 2021. In my opinion it's a lovely route, they stay the best one, with a bit of everything and the original one.

Good luck and I wish you well, Buen Camino.

I personally haven't but I walked a bit from Santiago to Fisterra with a man who had both hips and both knees replaced. He was doing just fine.

I am having a hip replaced in the next 4 weeks and hope to be able to walk again next May, any advice welcome.

If we agree that specific treatments will facilitate a return to active fitness, and persue recovery with active diligence, we can only hope for a successful outcome.
That's about it cobber.
Only time will tell, no matter how hopeful we are.
Tomorrow at 10.15am I'm to consult a specialist on the use of CBD OIL in the treatment of pain.
A plague of hip, spine, neck and heart ailments, have been joined by arthritis in the feet and hands.
The oil seems to be a hopeful alternative, or addition to drugs, which are now ineffective and dangerous because of the quantities required to only hopefully, gasp, attain some pain mediation.
I did give the CBD oil a serious, if unscientific, try a few years back, before the arthritis set in.
Surprising good results altho not considered a sufficient replacement for the then, current treatment.
However, those drugs, along with diet and lifestyle changes, are not now coping with the arthritic onslaught.
Wish me luck.
Regards
Gerard

PS. Gave up on the biking after a crash on the Danube tow path ride from Germany to Vienna. Maybe a tricycle?
Hope springs eternal for a real Pilgrim.

Gerard, here is wishing, hoping, and praying for a successful (or at least tolerable) solution to your pain issues. I am very interested in the outcome of your consult, and the progress you make with the treatment choices provided.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the kind wishes mate.
Here in Oz the Govt Health authorities only authorise senior health professionals, who are scientifically trained to their standards, to offer CBD Oil as a medication.
This has increased my hope as to its effectiveness.
My previous experience was with a friend who suggested I put two drops from a mail order supplied bottle under the tongue morning and night.
This person exhibited in my eyes a somewhat "Hippy" approach, in ensuring me it would alleviate most, if not all conditions, running the gamut from 'painful soles', to 'moles' and random 'sore holes'.
My queries as to the ingredients of this small, dropper topped bottle, elicited replies of, "Definitely no drugs, no chemicals, only good, healthy, natural ingredients!"
Yeah right.
Whatever, constant encouragement ensured I finally agreed to partake in a trial of my own construction. I firstly ceased using all pain alleviating drugs for a week, until I could hardly walk, then commenced the trial.
I can state without a doubt that pain level decreased significantly over the next few days and remained at that level while I continued the "treatment".
However my normal medication in Oz is generously subsidised.
CBD oil is not subsidised and would then have cost 6 times my then current medications, which worked well.
So from a cost point of view it was a no go.
It may now be a viable alternative due to arthritis rendering current meds ineffective. And cost is not a big issue if it ensures quality of life.
Hope all is going well in your heath struggles.
I'll keep you informed of developments.
Regards
Gerard

Gerard, Having read your post I realize my problems are quite insignificant. I hope the use of CBD will relieve your pain.
Best wishes
Dave
