There have been 117 Holy years since they were granted in 1122.
In the early Middle Ages the 30 December was St James’ Feast day, based on the old Hispanic (Mozarabic) rite. In the 11th century King Alfonso VI abolished the Hispanic rite in favour of the Roman rite and 25 July became the principal feast day to commemorate the martyrdom of St. James. December 30 was incorporated into the present liturgical calendar as the Feast of the Translation of his relics.
And, just to confuse matters more, although we celebrate his Feast Day on 25th July using the Roman Rite calendar, it was formerly on the 5th August on the Tridentine Rite calendar.

Due to wars and other calamties, some Holy Years were postponed or held in consecutive years.

There are some more news on the Holy Year 2010 celebrations today.

It seems like the pilgrims mass will be held 6 times per day and that there will be a limit on how many pilgrims can enter the cathedral at one time (1200 was mentioned). Have a look at the video from the press conference here:

That means they are expecting a possible 7200 pilgrims a day! How many of those are going to be arriving having walked, cycled or ridden a Camino and what proportion will have come by coach, car etc? Whatever, that is scary numbers!!

I walked in the last Holy Year and there were literally millions of coach pilgrims compared with only 179,944 who got the Compostela. Every day the queue of people waiting to enter the cathedral and hug the saint wrapped itself around walls, up the stairs and snaked around the square.
The queue outside the Pilgrims' Office was the same - a never ending stream of pilgrims waiting to get their Compostela.

August will be a very busy month next year.

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain, MAY 27, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The archbishop of Santiago de Compostela has officially announced the 2010 "Jacobeo" Holy Year, which is celebrated each year that the feast of the Apostle James the Greater falls on Sunday.
St. James (in Spanish, Santiago) is the patron of Spain. His feastday is July 25. The feast falls on a Sunday 14 times every century, giving rise to 14 holy years. Next year's celebration will be the second Jacobeo Holy Year of the third millennium. Archbishop Julián Barrio in a press conference Monday invited the faithful of Spain, all of Europe and of other continents to "make a pilgrimage to the tomb of the Apostle [James] to confess faith in the Risen Christ and to receive the abundance of divine mercy as a manifestation of the love of God for each person."
The prelate also presented a pastoral letter titled, "Pilgrims of Faith and Witnesses of the Risen Christ." The letter will serve as a type of itinerary for pilgrims to Santiago. It focuses on the experience of the disciples on the road to Emmaus.
One of the principal events of the year will be a pilgrimage with the World Youth Day cross in August. World Youth Day will be held in Madrid, Spain, in 2011.

I would like to begin the Camino in June of 2010 beginning at St. Jean-Pied-de-Port; does anyone have a feel as to how crowded it will be during that time? I understand it is a rather difficult question, but assuming that those who walked during the last Holy Year will have an opinion, I would be interested. Thank you.

In the 2004 Holy Year 21 544 pilgrims regsitered at the pilgrims' office. This doesn't mean that they all started there - I started in Paris and only passed through st Jean on the way to Roncevalles.

Stats for the past few years in St Jean show that the highest number of pilgrims starting in the months May to September is May with the lowest number starting in June.

The table highlights the popularity of May and August in 2007 as in 2006 with significant increases of 127% and 124%

Well, I walked the northroute in aug/sept 2004 (holy year) and I must say though I felt like I hit a noise wall when the North route met with the Camino Fances... I was quite surprised by the number of pilgrims in Santiago.

Sure there were many... and there were many tourists... but NOT as many as I had expected.

In Santiago, it was never difficult to find a place to stay. It was never difficult to find a place to eat or find a seat on one of the many terraces (bars) during the outdoor show at night.

Of course on the Camino Frances there might be more than usual, but I do remember that the number of pilgrims arriving was FAR from the number expected... (did people fear the it would be to crowded?) - anyway... I have heard from pilgrims who did the Camino Frances 2004 and it seemed like only after León the problems began with crowded albergues.

I would not worry... If you feel that 2010 is the year where you HAVE to do the camino. Then do it. But take some extra money with you in case you need to sleep in a hostal og hotel...

My thanks to each of your for your response. Given that it is a Holy Year will only make the Way more meaningful and added spirituality. Although I have thought about how the journey would be should the competition for space/beds, but I have concluded that it would be a small cross to bear should I need to sleep on the floor for a few nights. This has been several years in coming, and I am already looking forward to it. Peace to all.

Michael, in the middle ages hundreds of small pilgrim shelters catered for 12 pilgrims (the number of the apostles) and even today it is better to seek out the smaller, more basic shelters that might only provide a mattress on the floor. Sleeping in an old church or stone barn on a mattress beats camping anytime!

Michael please do not put yourself off doing the camino next year because of the increase in pilgrims. I myself will be doing a quiter route than the Frances next year, but only becuase I have done the Frances many times. The rush for beds is not only in the Holy year it is now. I have returned a week or so from the camino and in 17 days I slept with my camping mat on the floor in albergues for 4 nights - once in a chapel giving me my best sleep on the Camino. I would advise you to take a lightweight camping mat. People get up really early (obviously its practical because of the heat) and some people arrive where they want to stay at 10.30 -11am. Then they start the familar routine of clothes washing and having a sleep. For me the camino is about making use of the whole day, enjoying the rest periods, mixing with people and enjoying the sights that you see on the way. I constantly arrived, 6, 7, 8 pm. Dont get in the habit of bed rushing, if you put your trust in synchronicity you will be surprised what accomadation will turn up for you. For example we arrived late at Villamyor de Monjardin, both albergues completo. Went to the bar and the next minute the bar lady is saying she has a house we can stay in for 6 euros each! That wasnt in my guide book!

It is humbling to think of joining the thousands of pilgrims who have walked the Way before me. Their piety, their holiness, and their joy are examples to me. You each so easily share the wisdom you have gained and I will gladly learn from you. Gratefully I look forward to several more months on learning. Cheers.
