Looking for a clean affordable Hotel in Coimbra near the train station and Cathedral. We need some rest on our first day in Portugal to get over Jet Lag.

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
When I stayed in Coimbra in May 2014 I stayed in the Residential Larbel0. A clean and pleasant small hotel in the heart of the city by the river. I was sharing with another pilgrim and the twin room cost 35€.

The street was a bit noisy as there was an all night student party going on, literally all night. When we left at 7 am they were still revelling in the streets. There is an information office around the corner where you can get info on other accommodation.

I hope you have time for some sightseeing - Coimbra is a lovely city.

I second the vote for Larbelo. Quaint, friendly and relatively inexpensive

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Well rented a room at the Larbelo, arriving by train from Lisbon. Will spend the day resting from Jet Lag and start walking in the morning.

I hope it suits you as well as it did me.

You may or may not want a glimpse of what is to come on your walk. If you do, you are welcome to take a look at my blog where I posted every day live from the CP - http://magwood.me/camino-portuguese/.

I have just re-read my post for the stage from Coimbra to Mealhada, and I am sorry to report that it was, in my opinion, the least pleasant day of walking along the CP, but there was a jolly good supper at the end of the day.
Bom Caminho!

Yes Coimbra to Mealhada looks like it will be a hard first day! We were well trained for the Camino Frances, but had no time to train for this one. I had memorized every step of the way for the CF, but this time I am going in blind. It was a bit of a last minute thing this time around, new adventures and surprises to come! I will certainly study your account, Thank You!

When I stay in a place without soundproof windows or AC in any Spanish or Portuguese city, I tend to ask for an "interior room." This means you will have a window that opens to an air shaft, so in some cases it's a choice between a good supply of fresh air and quiet. But for me, the street noise is way beyond the level of noise I'm used to sleeping with at home, so I usually opt for the interior room unless it's the middle of summer and likely to be stifling.

And I agree with Magwood, that Coimbra has a very appealing old historical core.
