Hotel Resevation for a Conference

Hello!

I wonder if any one can help me. I am going to a conference at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Galicia in June 2005 (19th-24th) and am trying to find somewhere to stay.

The conference organisers have offered some suggestions such as Monte do Gozo and the Husa hotels (Universal, Cuidad de Compostela and Santiago Apostol), unfortunately some of these are already fully booked.

I am attending the conference on my own, and won't know any one there, so I am getting a bit confused about where is best to stay, as I realize that the conference centre is not in the city centre. Is it possible to walk to Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Galicia from any of the hotels/hostels in the city? I am quite happy to walk for 20-30minutes! There seems to be some great hostels/hotels around and I would really like to explore the city. I just didn't want to end up staying somewhere which was really inconvenient for getting to the conference or in the middle of nowhere, particularly as I will be on my own. Are taxis expensive and readily available, if need be?

I am used to travelling, so anything reasonably cheap and comfortable would suit me fine!

Any handy tips on a suitable hotel/location would be very gratefully received.

Thank you!

Hi Emma,

“Palacio de Congresos” is a bit out of old-town and I would guess a 30-40 minute walk.

It would be about 5-10 minute taxi ride, my guess is that it would cost about €5-6 or so to get you from the congress and down to old town. There is no problem getting a taxi from old town any time of day (there is one taxi stop at Plaza Galicia and another by the Alameda Park). Up by the congress center I would guess that they would call for a taxi for you when you need one. I don’t know of a taxi stop up by the conference center, but there are several big hotels close so I am assuming that there is one close by.

There are a few hotels close to the conference center.

Some suggestions:
“Tryp San Lázaro” (4-star), On the way to old town still very close to conference center. This hotel opened in March 2004 so it should have good standard.

Very close to conference center, but a bit pricy (5-star):

If you do not decide to stay in old town, to me it looks like the “Tryp San Lázaro” is a good choice.

If you decide to go for something in old town "Costa Vella" would be a good choice since it is on the right side of old town in regards to the conference center.

If you choose to stay in old town, you will get to experience Santiago in all its glory. If you choose a hotel close to the Conf. Center you will see less of it and therefore miss that part of your visit. My wife goes to a lot of conferences and I know she likes to stay close to the conference since she has to prepare for presentations and work at the conference. You know better how much time you will have avaliable to enjoy town. If you have time, I would suggest to stay in old town.

Hotel reservation for a Conference

Hi Ivar

Thanks so much for your help. Its made things alot clearer for me. I think I will try and stay in the old town. I am going to the conference without the boss, so hopefully I will find a bit more time to do some site-seeing!

Am currently e-mailing hotels/hostels from your list, and I hope I get lucky in finding an available room.

Thanks again, really looking forward to visiting Santiago!
