Greetings all, I have a 4 inch rip in my Atlus rain poncho and am wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to fix it. I am thinking duct tape, but there may be better ideas. Thank you in advance.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
More information about the location of the rip might get more useful answers...there are holes and there are holes in fabrics. :)

Duct tape never looks good no matter what colour you choose. Look out for tent repair tape in your local outfitters. I've use a similar product to THIS not on my Altus but on a similar poncho - still good after several years.

Clean and dry the area on both sides of the material and use a length of the tape on both sides too. Go about an inch past the point where the rip stops.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I checked out several articles on repairing tents that mentioned using this tape

Yacht Chandlers sell Spinnaker repair tape in several colours. This is waterproof. Follow Jeff Crawley's instructions (above) on how to use it.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
In sewingshops they often sell some goretexfabric bits that you can iron on .

Good Advise Jeff. That is how I do it.

That's the one I use, didn't know you could get it in the Americas - comes in a hand tube so you can carry it with you - good for reinforcing wear points on backpacks too.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

€60,-
After reviewing all the suggestions, I plan to use the tape that Tecile recommended, Gear Aid Tenacious Tape. The rip is in the middle of the poncho, not on a seam, and I think this will be perfect. I also like the fact that it would be easy to carry some and use it on the Camino for emergencies. Thank you all.

The care tag in my Altus says no iron - you might end up creating more holes than you'd be happy with !
You do it from the backside with a kitchentowel or som other piece of cotton cloth in between.

If the ripped fabric has DWR coating, even the coolest iron will ruin it. And after I tried to press a seam in treated nylon oxford cloth, once, I decided to ever after stick to finger-pressing. The coating is very delicate when heated.

One could, if the tape ideas don't work, or as a reinforcement to the tape, put a piece of compatible fabric--leftover nylon bit like maybe ripstop or taffeta from a dead poncho--under the rip, tape temporarily, and use it as an underneath patch while closing the hole with baseball stitches...after which seam sealant will be required. And you need steady hands as the stitches need to be reasonably even. If it were me, I'd try the Tenacious Tape or spinnaker tape.

Buen camino

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

I have some tape for repairing tents. The hardware store calls it material or fabric tape. It is a woven tape. This is in Australia. It wasn't very expensive.

In 2012 I was walking the Gudbrandsdalen pilgrimage route and tore my rain jacket on some barbed wire. The repair was done with stapping tape, which I carry to strap my feet for blisters. My two takes on this are
  • having specialist repair patches is nice, but not essential
  • don't duplicate - for example, if you are taking strapping tape, rethink adding duct tape as well.
ps - the repair is still in place eight years later, and still working quite effectively.

As an aside, on my own Altus the logo over the left breast is upside-down. It was purchased mail order from Peregrinoteca in Sarria and it was too much of a hassle to return it but the fault has nagged at me for the 10 years I have owned the Altus.
With all this talk of Tenacious Tape the penny dropped - if I bought some sage green tape (rip stop, the same as the Altus) I could put a patch over the offending logo and hide it. I still have some clear TT and you can also buy black over here in the UK but sage green not so much.
Then discovered it was cheaper to buy from a shop in Maine so now awaiting delivery.
While searching for outlets that sell the tape I discovered Tenacious Tape Tattoos (which, if nothing else, scores full marks for alliteration) - shaped adhesive patches you can use to personalise your jacket, tent, pack etc.
I thought this one might be appropriate for us
