How to get from Bilbao to Roncesvalles

Time of past OR future Camino

I am flying into Bilbao and want to start the Camino in Roncesvalles. I'd like suggestions for how to get to Roncesvalles. Then, can I stay at a pilgrim hostel the night before actually starting to walk?

Betsy Martin,

Welcome to the Forum!

Take a bus from Bilbao to Pamplona and then another bus to Roncesvalles.

You may stay in the pilgrim albergue at Roncesvalles on your first night even though you have not yet walked and you may also obtain your pilgrim Credential at the abbey.

Buen Camino,

Margaret Meredith

There are 2 buses every hour from the Bilbao airport to the bus terminal in downtown Bilbao which cost 1 Euro. The bus terminal is a little hodgepodge affair so you will need to find out which bus line you want to use and the scheduled departure time and buy a ticket at the appropriate window. Buses are rarely sold out but that depends on the day of the week and whether there are lots of students going to classes at the university in Pamplona. There is a reasonably priced hotel near the bus terminal named Hotel St. Mames.

I clicked on the link in your note, but can never get the info on a bus from Bilbao to Pamplona. All I get is a 'server error. Do you know if there still a bus?
Thanks, Fred G

Here is that bus link repeated from my post above. Bus company is La Union. They do NOT YET show the schedule for September.

The bus link provided gets to 'purchase ticket' web page and it does not work. If you try to enter trip information there it it gives server error, probably because we don't get 'Movelia' coverage here.

The website does provide schedule information from the home/inicio page. See the section 'search timetable'/Consulta de Horarios. You can also get a time table from 'print timetables/descarga horarios' in PDF.

Use this link:
http://www.autobuseslaunion.com/en/index.asp

And if all else fails use the Bilbao Termibus which has schedule information.
