How to walk a virtual camino in my local area and sync with Camino?

Hello, can you please recommend the best way how to do a virtual walk (actually walking) of the Camino?

I would love some inspiration to get out walking with my Mom in our local area. It would be great if we can pretend that we are walking the Camino. I did the real thing many years ago, and it would be cool to relive it with her. Ideally this would include:
  • when we walk, our distance is synced to the Camino. For example, we can see where we stopped last and that we have x amount of distance until the next town.
  • Google Earth for viewing the areas.
  • Route: St Jean Pied de Port --> Finistère
Thank you kindly,

Josiah

Hi Josiah. What a lovely idea!
What comes to my mind is: decide on a distance of the Camino you have walked. Find a visual record of that, in the resources on this forum or elsewhere on internet and go through it carefully with your mother. Then head out each day and cover that distance, and arrive home safe and sound, assured of a safe and welcoming Albergue each time you return home!
Go back over the actual section of the camino while enjoying your meal, and sleep well till you do the same thing day after day after day.

(I am also assuming that you would not be on a continuous walk, sleeping in accommodation other than your own home - but maybe you would be able to do that, you know your own situation regarding that kind of detail)
That is my simple response to your request, not by any means a contender for the best way, but you have to start somewhere!
I also have to say it is a challenge to try to be concise and clear. Reminds me of an exercise where the challenge is to write instructions for how to boil an egg, without leaving out key information!
Buen Camino.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I have an excel spreadsheet going, and since the end of March, I have walked a little over 500 kilometers on two caminos. I already had walked the first (the Invierno), so it was relatively easy to calculate distances based on what I had done before.

Now I'm virtually walking a Camino that I hope to be able to do for real someday, the Camino Viejo/Olvidado from Pamplona to Ponferrada. To calculate distances I'm using map files of downloaded Wikiloc tracks on my OsmAnd app.

So every day as I walk at home, I'm researching places to stay, distances, and points of interest along the way. It's much more fun than an automatic app that does all the work for me, and I'm learning a lot about the history, landscape, and culture along the way. On top of that, moving along the camino route keeps me interested and disciplined in the walking.

It's actually blowing me away - why is no-one walking this route!?? It. Is. Amazing!

Me too! I'm on Stage 7 as Canterbury Pilgrim.

A friend in BC and I are walking from Los Arcos to Logrono at present - in Torres del Rio as we speak. You can watch your progress on an embedded Google map, and we're collecting our sellos for our virtual credentials along the way!

You can pick up the .gpx files for the CF in our rescources section GPX files

or, if you prefer .KMZ format, practically every Camino in Europe that ends in Santiago can be found HERE

Beware - there are a LOT of Caminos in this file, they are all coloured in white and some are duplicated!

I also am on walking 4 fun as Camino Sharon. We are walking as I type to Leon. Can't wait. I wish the forum people would make a post on walking for fun, didn't realize so many people from the forum were walking with me.
Buen Camino

Im also using walking4fun and I will be in Burgos tonight!
For all of you using Walking4fun, can you tell me if the Premium upgrade from the free app is worth the cost? I'll gladly do that if it adds measurably to the experience.

A guide to speaking Spanish on the Camino - enrich your pilgrim experience.
My friend and I were due to be walking the Caminho Portugués, starting April 14th in Lisbon. We had plotted our route, but had not booked any accommodation. Of course our plans came to nothing as Portugal and Spain were both locked down and our flights cancelled.

He is in Montana (USA), and I'm in Derbyshire (UK), so we decided we would both walk the Caminho "virtually" and log our progress. Each day we exchange messages letting each other know how far we have walked and exchange pictures, stories and descriptions about the locations we have visited. It's great fun, and we are both learning a lot about the places the other one has visited. So for example, I walked to Hartington a few days ago, which is where they make the famous Stilton Cheese. I sent him a Wikipedia article on it and it turns out he loves the stuff!

So far I have walked 424km northbound from Lisbon, and am on the coastal route north of Porto. Unfortunately my friend is a long way behind me, because (living in Montana) he has great ski-ing and fly fishing to occupy him.

We are both looking forward to doing the real thing next year, and hope to meet some of you on our journey north. After all socialising is the best part of the Camino .....

I have the premium upgrade and it is worth it not to have all those ads popping up and ruining my Camino experience

Hi Martyduc.. can you tell me...do you need to have a pedometer or other gadget to use this? Or would an iPhone work? TIA, buen Camino , Hazel

Loving WorldWalking app. Tracks distances from my phone or via input from watch, shows pics along the way, tracks on a map. Free

WorldWalking also allows you to set up a group walk where people in your group can contribute their kilometres to progress along a group virtual CF - a nice way of sharing the experience.

Just need any way of estimating your distance, because you enter the distance or steps directly to the website,, it's very easy!

If you have a Fitbit or Garmin device you can sync that with the website.
